Thoughts on replacing chain cam with gear cams
« on: October 25, 2005, 05:22:51 PM »

Hearing so much hype on the wear and tear on the cam shoes, I was wondering what the members of this board think of replacing the chain driven cams with gear driven cams.  Thanks for your input. [smiley=confused5.gif]

Many, if not most, are going to change. Lot's of threads here. See http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1128032274 for one.

Do a search for gear drive cams, there is a bunch of info here (with pics) on why to change them. Bottom line is that it is a crap shoot how long they will last. I have seen some a t 8k that have started to loose chunks of the shoe and destroy the oils pump. Here's a thread on some that ireplaced that had 15k on the clock: http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1125534944/0

I've seen the damage done , so I'm going with gear drives with my 95 build.

Even at $600.00 for the cams and gears it is still cheap insurance. Don't forget to change the cam bearings (inner ) the outers have to be changed to fit the new cams

you'll also notice that your motor will respond better with the gear drive cams

JustBill,When you get ready to change to gear drive cams make sure your mechanic checks the runout on your crank end before you do the swap. If it is more then the recommended amount your gear drive will be very noisy. My friend had this happen on his 03 Dyna. After that he installed a 103 inch kit and when it was apart they trued the crank.  That cured the noise. (of course he had to buy a new set of cam gears by that time).CAHDBIKER

IMOH  I would replace with the 07  up style camplate and pump with hydro tensioners.   Doc

Was considering doing the conversion, spoke to a dealer service tech and he said that since the new style tensioner they have not had the problem of premature failure. This is a dealer that would have done the job if I had wanted. Think I will take his advice and wait

find a good outlaw shop with a machinst.  SS 570 gear drive cams.  Weld the crank in place so it won't slip.  Oh---deck the heads 30 thou, swap the pistons and rings, polish port and a pro pipe while your at it.

Don't forget to change the barrels to Axtells, and do some head work if you're gonna go thru all this work! Maybe even look at the S&S 585 cams. And if the crank's out, do the Timken conversion! ;)
