I am thinking about purchasing a king tour pak for my 2003 SERK and am wondering has ever moved up the tour pak and used the tour pak as the rider back rest? What are the challenges?

Just did this with my chopped Tour Pak. Mounted it on the solo detachable rack plus the George Anderson relocation kit. I used the relocation kit as I'm thick so I like a little room.

Is it comfortable? How does it hit back in terms of height?

With the bracket I can move it back to allow the use of my riders backrest or leave it forward using it as the backrest. I'm 5'9" with short legs and a long torso. It is very comfortable. It also moves the weight forward making the bike more responsive.

Without the bracket it maybe a bit close for me, but LarryB has a King TP on his 09 Road Glide w/o a bracket which works great for him!

Here's a different angle.

i still have the Corbin back rest which I use 50/50 % of the time. the backrest on the tp is just a little further back. when I mounted the tp to the bracket I adjusted it forward, it can be mounted back about 1-2 in.
any tp will mount on anybracket, dont let someone tell you it wont work,
the older(pre06) tp's are made of fiberglass, harder to work on. newers are ABS and can be filled, sanded painted to match whatever you got.
think of it in terms of 1, make sure you have the docking hardware for the rack you have and that it fits fine.2, then place the tp on top and check it out, maybe ask one of the neighbor ladies to hold it while you sit on the bike for adjustemnt

Larry B. I like the set up with the driver back rest and the rider back rest on the Tout Pak. Now I just need to figure what seat and back rest. Thanks for the pics.
