converting from EFI To a carb.....
« on: August 25, 2009, 01:39:03 AM »

Got a pretty good miss around 3000 RPM. Turns out my bike has ported heads by Radar of S&S fame, a bigger camshaft and High Compression Pistons. The bike is a real runner, and the hottest bagger I have owned. I love Carburated Machines. I would have this lean-miss long gone by now. I am very familiar with the following carbs, and have worked on, installed and tuned them - The S&S E and G, The Harley CV and the Mikuni......
I want to convert to a carb, as I intend to do all my own work on this bike. I need some guidance here about wiring harness, petcock conversion cruise control etc..... Anyone here on the forum done one of these conversions? Is there any good reason not to do this conversion?? I love this forum. it has been way helpful. Thanks!!!!

There have been a few of us who have done our 01 SERG's. Had I known it was so easy I would have done mine sooner. I have zero regrets and love the carb over the injection.

Start with the parts manual form your year bike, 04?
Wiring, You'll need the Ignition patch harness from a carb bike from your model year. $51.29
Intake, which ever one matches your carb of choice and motor size. $48.00
Carb, I ran a Mikuni with a Riverra cruise control adapter, the CV is a fine choice for the cruise. $75.00
Ignition, I went with a Screamin Eagle box and coil for my year bike. $93.00
Fuel tank, petcock conversion kit with a 22MM petcock (link below for the adapters). $47.28
Misc, in line fuel filter, map sensor clip and screw. $1.76

I spent $317.23 on my conversion as I already owned the carb and petcock. It took me less than an afternoon to complete and everything was plug and play, no cutting. I sold the injection stuff along with the ECM for almost what I paid for the conversion parts.

You will also need an air cleaner assembly. I ran the Mikuni round one initially before switching to a Cycle Visions Mo-Flo.

I took the parts book from my 2006 Touring (carb was still offered) and went page by page.  For 2006, it would need the main harness, ignition control, coil, carb, manaifold, some conversion to the fuel tank pump assembly.  The harness is between $550 and $600.  It would be about a grand total.
It would be practical if i  can find a wreck.

Go over to Harley Tech Talk and do a search. They whole threads dedicated to carb conversion complete with part numbers and prices along with several shop members who have done quite a few of them and can help you out. I should have went carb on my Marelli bike but stuck with Zippers and finally got it sorted out.
