Lucas oil in place of Syn 3 or Redline or Amsoil etc
« on: September 14, 2009, 09:10:36 AM »

 :confused5: :confused5:

Any one here used the Lucas series of oil products.  My dealership is pushing this oil as a replacement for Syn 3.

Was planning non switching to Redline or Amsoil or Mobil.  Seems that all of these are good.

They have one for the engine, tranny and primary.  All synthetic.

Lucas is a used in drag engines quite a bit.

Any thoughts on the Lucas oil????

I don't have a comparison of Lucas with the top oils typically used, but, Red Line, Mobil-1, and, Amsoil, had the highest rating in the 20-50w comparisons I have. I like these products above, so I stay with them, unless I have a lot of info saying otherwise.

Tranny:
I've used Lucas gear oil in the tranny of my Fatboy and the new Ultra. It pretty much eliminated the shifting noise in my Fatboy but for some reason, it didn't help much with the Ultra. The only difference is five speed vs. six speed.

Engine:
There are people here that use Syn3 and swear by it others that will never use it again. I'll have to admit that my engine didn't start making noticeable noise until I removed the Syn3 break-in oil and changed to Amsoil. When the "clacking" noise started annoying me, I removed one quart of Amsoil and added a quart of Lucas engine additive. This combination didn't do anything to quiet it down so my second oil change was to Mobil 1_V Twin and I honestly believe there was some improvement (not much). When I use the last of my Mobil 1, I want to try Redline's 20-60. The higher viscosity might make a difference in the summer heat.

Primary:
I'm using Amsoil 20-50 without any problems.

I was a long time user of Amsoil and just recently switch to Redline in all 3 holes. I have not noticed a difference with the eng oil, but the trans and primary fluids made a huge difference in shifting and gear noise.

 :drink: :drink:

Try this.  Can't find any others.

http://www.syntheticoildistributor.com/files/Download/StudyofMotorcycleOils.pdf from June of 2009.

If you can believe these numbers, Amsoil is the best in the engine.

They also have similar results for the primary and tranny.

Redline Shockproof is not reviewed or I can't find it.

Here is a Used Oil Analysis of Lucus 20W50. The oil was run in a friends bike for 1500 miles. As you can see the SUS Viscosity is 60.3 which means it broke down to a 30 weight oil. If it was still a 50 weight it would have had a SUS Viscosity of 83.1,and 10.29cst is closer to 30wt than the 12.5cst of 40wt. It has a nice additive package but it's base oil just is not that good. IMO
Thanks for the link BTW.

Found it, I had it in a PDF, but knew I had it in an email too, it's on page 174, this is probably more info than most people will want to read, the results are at the end of the file! Also a forum I had, might want to check it out, not sure how deep people want to get into oil!

Thanks for the Links
Interesting read. It looks like a Amsoil dealers started the web blog site. LOL
I am more than a little obsessed with oil research, so I enjoy all the reading I can find even if it's dated.
One thing I have found with motorcyclist regardless of brand ridden, what ever oil they have in the motor it's almost always the best oil they have ever used.

Might take a look at www.amsoil.com for their updated independent study.  In a field of 17 Group 50 contenders, Lucas HP ranked 16th across 12 tests. Mobil 1 V-Twin was 2nd behind AMSOIL and SYN3 was 4th.  It is a pretty broad series of tests and if you believe the results, Lucas likely wouldn't be your 1st choice.

Cheers,

Clearly, the Lucas loses based on the info availble.  And clearly Amzoil wins, Mobil 1 second.

Not suprising, It has been know for a while that Amsoil uses the same basestock as Mobil 1 (Group IV PAO basestock), but used oil analysis reports showed AMSOIL used higher levels of detergents and anti-wear additives.
I would not recommend Lucas either.

In motorcycle oil they can boost the antiware additives, but that is the difference in most motorcycle oils, they have more zinc, and phosphorus than car oils, this is due to the catalytic converters on cars. With the new Harley's having catalytic models, wonder what the effects are, probably not much, they only increase it a little then charge you a lot more!
