Handlebars - 5 different ones. Personal review.
« on: January 20, 2010, 08:36:55 PM »

Stock
Ergo Back
Wild 1 575
Wild 1 577
HD Tall Boy

I'm on my fifth set of bars (HD Tall Boy) including the stock. Here's my personal opinions of how they've fit me on the 2010 Ultra.

I'm 6'4" and while I like the wrist position, the 575 pull back and height were just not a good fit for me. I wouldn't say they wouldn't fit all tall men because you never know until you try. They were a bit too low and came too far back towards the rider for my long arms.

The Ergo Backs were very good on height and overall position. The only thing I didn't care about them was the wrist angle. To me, they were just a wee bit too straight out sideways. Using the turn signals did not feel natural because of the wrist angle. Another tall rider I know tried a pair and didn't like his either for that reason. I could never quite settle all they way in with these bars but they were actually pretty comfortable for highway and "almost" perfect.

The 577's were just too tall. As a matter of personal taste, they look ridiculous in my personal opinion with a fairing totaling destroying the lines of the Ultra. They stick out over the faring way to much. Handling is awful in slow turns such as parking lots but have to admit, they are really quite comfortable on the highway.

So now I have the HD Tall Boy. I've only about 60 miles on them but the wrist angle is very good. Handling in slow turns is excellent. The height may be and inch too low but after the 577's anything will seem low at first. I will know for sure on the next ride. I plan on doing about 150 miles and that will confirm for me if they are the ones or not. But as of now, I feel the HD Tall Boy is the best all around feel and look.

It's been an expensive, frustrating journey. Perhaps this may help others avoid the same.

Jesse, Thanks for sharing your handlebar mission, sure sounds like an expensive mission!! I am 5'8" and have a 2010 CUSE coming in Feb, thinking about the Wild 1 575, sat on a bike at Sturgis last year, seemed to work well for me, of course you really don't know until you ride it. Thanks again, Ride Safe and God Bless, Tom

It seems that men of your height really enjoy them for the most part. May be just the ticket for you. I can tell you one thing, Wild 1 quality is second to none. The 1.25 bar looks and feels like pure top of the line quality. I personally feel Wild 1 makes the best quality bar available. I just wish I could have them custom design one just for me. javascript:void(0);

That's a lot of time and money you have in bars! Do you still have the all the old ones for a comparison pic?

Sorry fellas, I didn't take photos. Sold one already others are for sale on ebay. It has been insanely expensive since I don't have the skill to do it myself. That's why I really wanted to share my findings. My bad on the pics though. Fortunately, a google will produce pics of each of these bars on an Ultra by other riders.

I'm 5'11" and ride with Wild 1 576s, the tallest bagger bars they make at 14 inches. They work great for me. I can cut tight corners at low speed as good as I can with stock bars. It's just a matter of getting used to them. On the highway, which counts most for me, they are great.

May I ask you how much the total installation costs was to install the HD tall boys plus wiring, brakes, and clutch extensions?  I have a 2008 SE Ultra and have always wanted higher bars but catalog states will not fit bikes equipped with ABS.  Can you give me some insight on this?  All would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,
not sure about the ultras but had the same problem with my Road King and the ABS, went with what they referred to at the dealers as the "cop" bars they use to equip the police bikes, worked out well for me and they were able to get all of the wiring in the bars as well was around $250 installed. Discuss with your dealer as they may know what works with the ABS. My riding position is much improved and worth the effort. :2vrolijk_21:

Cost was around $500. That included the price of the bars. I'm not sure if you would need to extend anything because my cables and wires had already been extended from the installation of the previous bars (WO577) which definitely needed lengthening. However, no extensions were needed for the ergo backs or the wo575s. It seems to me no extensions would be necessary for the tall boys but I can't confirm that either way. It also may be a matter of who you talk to and the skills of the mechanic.

As for fitting with ABS, they are on my bike right now and the ABS works fine.

By the way, contrary to what some service guys will tell you, all wires can be ran internally. It's a tight fit but if the mechanic is willing to take a few extra minutes and do it right it can be done. They did it on mine.

Sorry Jon, the auction ended yesterday and I didn't see your post until today. The ergo bars were sold to another member on this site directly. Thanks for asking though.

I'm 5'8" and just put a set of 575's on my 2010 and they are perfect.  Nice thing about them was all you needed were the bars. Everything else had plenty of slack to fit nicely without binding during turns.  I put a set on my 07 and needed to redo the brake line with one that was two over.  These bars angled correctly are extremely comfortable.  The 1/4 show chrome looks great too.
