Motorcycle Trailer - hitch height
« on: January 30, 2010, 03:18:09 PM »

This may sound dumb, but I had to borrow a trailer the other day to take my bike to the dealer, I had a screw in the front tire and did not want to chance riding it in this condition.  So I borrowed the trailer from a friend and had to borrow a ball mount and ball from the guy.  The hitch he had made the trailer real high in front and may have been the right ball mount for his truck but not mine.  In trying to determine which ball mount I need for my truck, all the info says measure the top of the hitch receiver - 18 inches for my truck.  And then measure the height of the trailer at the inside of the coupler.  Well, I don't think I will know what the height is for whatever trailer I may have to borrow, it may be a different trailer next time.  I have tried to find out if there is a standard height for motorcycle type trailers, but no one has been able to tell me, not even a trailer dealer.
I am asking what is the height at the inside of the coupler for the trailer(s) that most of you out there are using?
Or if any of you have a Chevy 2500HD truck, what ball mount height are you using, 2 in drop, 4 in drop, 6 in drop?

Since you don't own a trailer and may be borrowing different ones you may want a universal hitch similar to what you can find here and pictured below....

I don't know what the height is, but most motorcycle trailers are of two heights, depends on whether is has drop axles or not.
If it is a dual axle trailer it is more important to have the trailer sit level.

Either way I would attempt to keep it level.

The hitch Gary posted will have clearance issues on a drop axle or low profile trailer unless you remove the lower ball. Uneven roads and driveways are the issue here.

With my drop axle trailer I use a 6" drop hitch (06 GMC Duramax). But I have put bigger tires on and I will be switching to a 8" drop in order to level the trailer.

In the picture below I am using a hitch similar to what Gary posted and I cannot get in my driveway without the hitching dragging, badly, and this is with the stock tires. And you can see the trailer is still not level and the hitch is adjusted all the way down.

Here is another hitch that is adjustable from 7" down to 6" up ( you flip the hitch 180 degrees)

I would have used one of these but they are limited to 5000 pound capacity an I need 10-12,000 pounds.

Most of the bike trailers use a 2" ball.

All trailers are different as are the vehicles used to tow them. I have 2 trailers of my own and access to 5 more. I also tow with 2 different vehicles. I have collected 10 different hitches to fit my receivers. Mix and match them to get the trailer level. Sorry but nothing is standard or easy.
