Dust Repellent??
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:40:58 PM »

Some great tips on here.........  Thanks everyone!!

Just bought the black CVO.  I've had black vehicles in the past so I understand how difficult it is to keep them clean  >:(.  This bike, however, seems to be a dust magnet.  Is there anything that anyone uses that sort of helps to repel dust?  I realize that I'm going to have to wash it more often than usual but I'd like something to extend the clean look beyond a day or two.

Another question.........  Given how recent this bike has been painted (within the last month and a half or so), how long before you can wax and/or use some kind of detailing spray?

Thanks for your help.

Over the years I have used just about ALL those bike cleaners. Then someone suggested Pledge. That's what I use now and it works great. While it won't repel dust it makes keeping it clean and shiny easier.

Try using a polymer sealant.  I use Auto Magic #70.

There really isn't a restriction on how soon you can polish or wax a factory paint job.  The baking process has already driven off most of the solvents in the paint.  The thing you need to be aware of is that the urethane based clearcoats tend to be a little "soft" for the first 30-60 days, so it's easier than usual to introduce swirls and scratches.  So go easy on the wiping and buffing, and stay away from abrasive products.

Good luck on finding a dust repellent.  It's been my experience that the plastic in the fairing and bags becomes a dust magnet, not a repellent.  Probably a static thing.  Maybe a couple of those grounding straps, along with a racoon tail on the antenna, would do the trick? ;)

And some curb feelers. Especially one for the back so you don't bugger your pipe on the curb backing in to park :huepfenlol2:

I have heard that wiping the surface with clothes dryer sheets will stop the static, but have not tried it myself yet. I was afraid it may scratch the clearcoat.

I had a black bike for 7 years and "The BOM" is the best I have found. I use it even after waxing to repel the dust. We had a dust storm in Havasu one year, I came out in the morning and the bikes were trashed. I was able to blow the dust off of mine, everyone else had to wash theirs.

Depending on the cloth your using, you may be causing static electricity and that will cause every piece of lint in the air to stick to it. Take an old spray bottle that you have laying around and make sure it is clean (windex), mist sections down with clear tap water from the old windex bottle and wipe clean with a micro fiber towel. This should slow the dusting process down. This is how I clean my bike after riding. The people that I ride with think I'm always washing it to keep it so clean. I have actually only washed it one time so far this year and yes I ride several times a week and a few hundred miles on the weekends. Good Luck
