I need a little perspective and while I generally make really sound decisions advising other people I sometimes do something for myself and later wonder, "wtf were you thinking?"

I own a really, really (really) nice 2004 FLSTFI "Fatboy" bought new by a big spender type in 2004 at my local stealer. Flush with wads of cash from the construction biz and hysteria over the MOCO's 100th year bikes the big spender bought the bike for list, say $18k and pushed it up to the parts counter and dropped another $18k in bolt on's (I have $38,500. in receipts / build sheets).

I found the bike through a friend in his garage in 2007 with 1200 miles on it, a dead battery and about 15 minutes from being repo'd due to lack of payment on a balance of about $2100. (right)

He wanted $25,000 for it but in the end I bought the bike for less than half what the big spender paid for it and have enjoyed riding it but have always thought it was "too nice" and have only ridden it 300-400 miles a year since 2007 (It's one of four I own). I ride just not this bike.

I was in a local dealership today and saw a 2007 VRSCX CVO (Screamin' Eagle VROD) one of 1400 made. It's an '07 but it's brand new, never sold or titled and it retailed in 2007 for just shy of $21k Talking to the dealer I mentioned the Fatboy and he remembered the bike (from 6 years ago) and offered me the vrod for the fatboy if I paid the fees on the transaction, about $1500-1600.

Thoughts? Should I trade the '04 Fatboy for a 2007 VRSCX? I own a second softail that I ride quite a bit, a Streetglide and an old hotrod sportster I ride more than I ride the Fatboy.  A lot about the vrod appeals to me and while I know financially I might be able to sell the fatboy privately I think in the end this might be a sound investment.

CVO1: 2005 FLHTCSE2 - Yellow

I'd make the trade.  Seems like a good deal to me.  Just to let you know thought that bike is not a CVO.  Screamin Eagle yes but CVO no.  They only made a CVO V-Rod in 2005 and 2006.  The nice thing is that bike comes with the same 1250 cc engine, 240 rear tire, and the bigger fuel tank.  My only dislike of the bike it the lack of chrome.  The engine cases etc are just brushed aluminum finish.

Up to you; it's probably easier than selling it yourself in the current market.  But subtract $1500-1600 from what he says he is offering you.  "Transaction fees"?  That involves what, him typing in a few boxes and printing some pages instead of sitting at his desk twiddling his thumbs?  He doesn't have to bring somebody in to do that, or pay anyone extra - it's called profit.  Whether it has been sold or not, it doesn't have the same value as when it was new.  And once you roll it out the door it's a 3-year old bike with low miles.  If you have to have a new toy (and I've been there) and price isn't that important, then it's the lowest hassle way to go.  But look at it as "I'll give you my bike and sixteen hundred dollars for yours."  Sounds like in the end you'd be letting the Fat Boy go for about $16K.
