Wiring problem installing HD LED headlight
« on: September 20, 2010, 06:55:19 PM »

Started installing the HD LED headlight on my 07 and ran into a wiring problem.  The headlight has a three terminal male harness.

The only place to plug the LED harness into is the three pin female connector on the bike harness (connector on the left side of this pic).  The only problem with doing that is now you have no place to plug in the three pin male connector in the bike harness that controls the garage door opener.  Looks like the only solution is to cut the connectors off that go to the stock headlight bulbs and splice in a three terminal male connector in their place.

Any thoughts on this?  Just hate cutting the bike harness!

Keep digging.  There should be a m/f connector set that runs off to the door opener.  You should be able to just unplug the dual bulb set and plug in your new LED.  There is also a big A$$ diode bridge that is in there for the dual lamp setup.  All that should just unplug and come out.  You might need to cut a few tiewraps.

You don't have to cut anything if you don't wish to.  If you choose not to you'll need to buy a little pigtail though.  70423-98 is a harness that has one male and two female H4 plugs (that's the three wired headlight plug).

It'd be plug and play for a bike with an H4 bulb to begin with.  But with the dual H9 and H11 bulbs in the reflector those bulbs have a different plug.  So the adapter harness to mate to those bulbs is already occupying the H4 plug.

I think I have one of those pigtails left from my International reflector conversion on my '08 FLTRI.  It came with the pigtail and I didn't need it.  I'll see if I can find it if anyone needs it - unless I already gave it to Mattm.  Can't remember...damn I hate this CRS disease! Yep, finished it last night.  Ran into another problem besides the wiring.

The headlight came with a new adjuster plate.  They didn't tap threads into the three holes that the screws for the headlight retainer ring screws into.  Glad I have a set of taps!

No one had the pigtail that Don was telling me about so I ended up cutting the bulb connectors off the bike harness and splicing in a three prong connector from NAPA.

Here's a few pics.
