Six Speed complete transmission or gear set?
« on: March 12, 2006, 02:00:33 PM »

There's a fair saving to make by just getting the HD 6-speed gear set rather than the complete transmission - anybody done that? How long to fit the gear set versus the transmission?

I had mine done with just the gearset, alot less hrs also, was only a few hrs on the install of just the gearset.  Lowest overall price is the reason I went with it, of course the other route it's easier to recompensate by selling the old (complete) tranny vs. just a gearset, which still seems to be sitting in the box in my geerage.

Well, I'd certainly consider the resale of the complete (old) 5-speed first, that sale could make the difference up.  The gearset alone is a little harder to sell....

Hi Jim, sounds like we may we need to talk.

For reasons I won't go into - but I bet you can guess - I have just discovered that I am in the market for a standard silver transmission housing.

If it was complete ie with all the guts -  it would be less of a job to change

Cheers

I went with the complete gear box,,,,2200.00 bucks I think it was.  The labor to replace it was only 337.00, and the reason being, I could fall back on the sale of the complete 5 speed later if I wanted, or,,,swap it again if I traded the bike.

It was a jolt in the wallet for sure, but I just have this thing about having somone grinding stuff in the case.  Of course,,,the chrome starter, inner primary and the gearing change didnt help in the cost department....lolololol

How many hours labour would that be, Tom?

Most shops schedule a flat rate of 4.5 hours on the change out.  Total bucks would depend on the labor rate for the shop you're going to use.

Hey Jim - no fair - that was gonna be my question

What do you think the Dealer labour rate is in the US? - gotta be about $75 per hour - so that's 4.5 hours (ish) to do the job

Hmmm - Guess I'm going to have to grin and bear it unless I can convince the dealer to exchange it under warranty....

Or, I might buy the housing myself ($330 from, your mate and mine, John at Zanotti) and get the job done privately

Cheers

Dave

PS I guess BLM can type faster than me...

Has anyone used or compared the Baker 6-speed to the HD 6-speed? I've got access to the Baker tranny, and haven't compared pricing. Just wondering about the performance.

I am having my stealer install a new six speed (gear set) before I take delivery of my 06  SE FLTHCUSE. His quote is 7 hours for installation or $560.00. I am also going to have him install a Chrome inner primary cover at the same time, don
