"Roll Your Own" SE Air Cleaner
« on: March 30, 2006, 08:44:16 PM »

The Screamin' Eagle air cleaner kits currently available DO NOT come with the superior K&N oiled air filter element.  The non-oiled paper elements that H-D currently uses are not very durable, and in fact some of the rubber gaskets have shown major deterioration in 5000 miles.  You can do as I did, which is to throw the paper element in the weeds and buy the real K&N filter element (or the similar element from Zippers or Arlen Ness).  Unfortunately, this involves additional expense on top of the rather excessive price for the original SE kit.  There is another way for those who haven't purchased the kit yet.  Purchase the K&N filter (K&N part number HD-0800, internet or direct, approximately $45 to $50), then buy the chrome back plate ($40) and the studs/screws/etc. individually from your dealer.  The following H-D part numbers, combined with the K&N filter element, equals a kit like the old SE air cleaner, without the added expense of the throwaway paper element, and with a better looking chrome back plate:

Back Plate, Chrome             29510-05
Gasket                              29583-01A
Breather Tube - rubber (2)  29557-05
"O" ring (2)                        11292
Stud, mounting (3)              29447-99A
Screw, button head (3)        3938

You reuse the original breather hollow bolts, but if you need new ones for some reason the part number is 29465-99.

Jerry
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4/9/06  Updated gasket part number to 29583-01A

10/20/06  Something I should have included originally, torque specs and exploded drawing.
When installing backing plate, loose assemble 2 breather bolts and then the 3 mounting studs, then tighten breather bolts, then mounting studs.  This will aid in aligning the throttle body and prevent crossthreading.

Good info.  Better way to go and you get the chrome too.
I can't tell you how long it's been since I "rolled my own".  I may purchase this stuff just for the "experience"...again.

I may have missed a thread here, but won't the Arlen Ness Big Sucker set up work ? They use the K&N element and have the chrome backing plate with the new breather arrangement. On sale now at Eastern Performance for $99.

Jerry

I just went to Zanotti's to order the individual items but the Gasket (29583-01) comes back "Item not found"

Can you verify the number for me?

I may need to go to the local dealer to get it....Zanotti's generally really good but this time no go..

Thanks

Al

Al,

That's the correct number for the part that comes with the regular SE kit.

Safe to assume that the stock cover still works?

Forgive my ignorance, I just picked up my bike a month ago and it is my first bike without a carb.  I have been down the rejet road and now am at a loss as to know how to proceed.

The 103 has enough power for now, and I am not terribly interested in a thunder-boomer but may want to "improve things" just a bit.  With the sensors in the exhaust, remapping and such its not just changing the filter and pipes.  The ones that came with the bike seem pretty restrictive.

Anybody offer some thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome......What I decided to do is D&D Fatcat pipes (with Ghost pipe), ThunderMax ECM from Zippers, and SE AC upgrade from the Parts list in THIS thread.

.....I noticed you'd mentioned you were getting the Thundermax ECM, you may want to get the Zippers filter element also (BTW members here also get a discount on that filter element). It would be my guess they would already have a map for that element and pipes you are adding. I'm not trying to sway you one way or the other, but past experience has led me to believe that if at all possible match up as many parts as you can.

Thanks for the reminder and filling in what I missed....I actually DID order the Zippers K&N standard size filter at the same time as I ordered the ThunderMax.  Also as you mentioned, I asked for the map installed for Standard Baffle FatCats...SJ Dude also gave me a local contact from this board (hd-dude is his handle) where I can get quality work at reasonable pricing for my install...
