Cruise Control Module
« on: June 05, 2011, 09:50:55 AM »

My module does not work according to the local Harley dealership techinician. Can I just replace the module (70995-04) and not perform any adjustments?

Most cruise control problems involve a faulty throttle roll off switch; seldom is the module the problem.  Has the service manager satisfied you that the module is the problem, or just said you need to replace the module?  HD has an Electrical Diagnostic Manual with an extensive diagnostic protocol for cruise control problems.  Did the service dept. use it to conclude that the module was the problem?  I ask because the module is a $300 part and I'd want to be sure that was the culprit before buying a new one.

Also, the module appears to include the actuator cable which means the mechanical connection between the module and throttle will need to be disconnected when the new module is installed and the cable lash initialization procedure done (basically this syncs the module's cable to the throttle).  It's not a complicated procedure and its explained in the service manual, and, if you don't have the manual, you can find it by googling cable lash initialization as it's been posted on numerous forums.

Double-check the p/n for the module.  If you use this link, you'll get a different p/n:

https://s16819.endeavorsecure.com/ViewCart.htm?action=hlsmtransfer&hlsmno=39589&hlsmitem_1=70989-04|HarleyDavidson|CRUISE%20CONTROL%20MODUL|281.49|1&hlsmmodel_1=2007|HarleyDavidson|Street%20Bike|FLHTCU%20ULTRA%20CLASSIC®%20ELECTRA%20GLIDE®%20(FC)

It will show p/n 70989-04 for the cruise control module.

From another site...

Easiest way to check all dropout fucntions of your cruise control.

1. bike off, run/stop to run
2. push set/resume to set and hold.
3 with cruise on/off switch to on, turn on bike
4. cruise indicator light should be green, release set switch, light should turn red.
5. push to resume and release, light should turn green then red
6. push throttle closed and release, light should turn green then red
7. push rear brake pedal and release, light should turn green then red
8. pull front brake lever, light should turn green then red
9. on models with a clutch/neutral starter lockout, pull clutch lever, light should turn green then red

whichever switch does not turn the light green, is your bad one.

if light will not turn green at all and you have followed ALL directions and tried multiple times, your set/resume switch is bad.

If light stays green even after releasing set switch, one of the dropout switches is stuck closed, usually the roll off throttle switch. unplug this and try again.

make sure brake light will not turn on without using brakes (wobbly brake lever, stuck rear brake light switch etc.)

And also from another site...

If you were doing a throttle cable adjustment it is possible that you may need to do an initialization . Here is the scoop from the service manual:
The engine should be at normal operating temperature and throttle and idle cables should be correctly adjusted. To set the correct cable lash proceed as follows:
1. Push the Cruise Switch on the right handlebar to RESUME and hold it.
2. Turn the Cruise ON/OFF switch to ON.
3. Turn the Ignition switch to IGNITION.
4. Start the engine. The green Cruise Enabled/Engaged lamp in the speedometer will illuminate.
Wait 3 Seconds for the lamp to go off.
5. Release the Cruise Switch from the RESUME position
6. Push the Cruise switch to RESUME and hold. Cruise will pull in cable until change in RPM is detected. The number of motor steps required to rev the engine is stored in memory.
7. After engine revs and Cruise Enabled/Engaged lamp is extginguished release the Cruise Switch from the RESUME position.
8 Turn the ignition switch to off.

Some possible causes for improper operation are

If the cruise engaged lamp does not illuminate at all, check for one or more of the following conditions:

a. SET/RESUME switch faulty or not wired correctly.
b. Broken or pinched wire to SET switch or cruise module.
c. Cruise engaged lamp burned out or miswired. Lamp is turned on by module supplied ground.
d. Main 10-place connector not plugged into cruise module.
e. Faulty cruise main switch and associated wiring.
f. No module ground at Terminal E of 10-place module connector.
g. Brake light on constantly.
h. Throttle cables too tight.**
i. Bad cruise control fuse.
