My 07 fxstsse is constantly weeping hydrolic clutch fluid from the resivior next to the clutch. I tighten it frequently but am afraid if too tight it will destroy the seal. HD says its a sealing issue because of the chromed unit. I think the gasket should make up for that though. I am also concerned that if it is not cleaned off quickly it will ruin the chrome finish on other areas it leaks onto. It was replaced under warranty once, but the same issue exists and HD says its a maintenance issue. (no kidding!)
Anyone have this happen?
When you say "HD says its a maintenance issue", is that something you heard directly from the MoCo, or just some more of that dealership BS we all know and love? I'm betting dealership, and that answer is total BS. There are plenty of chrome master cylinders on other CVO's that do not weep brake fluid, and there is no maintenance requirement for wiping down the leaking fluid. BTW, you do realize that the DOT 4 fluid in that M/C will damage paint, right?
Are you positive that the fluid is weeping from the cover gasket, or is it possibly coming from the banjo fitting or the seal for the actual plunger (the part the lever presses into the cylinder)? And don't overtighten the cover screws; they take a very tiny amount of torque. Overtightening can cause a leak because it distorts the gasket. And last but definitely not least, make certain the reservoir isn't overfilled. As the clutch wears, the fluid level in the reservoir actually increases. Keep the level below the full mark.
If you can verify that the fluid is definitely weeping from the cover gasket, buy a new gasket and after cleaning the gasket surface of the reservoir and cover, plus checking both surfaces for flatness, reinstall the cover and gasket with a small screwdriver and light pressure. The torque spec is 6 - 8
inch pounds, which is nearly nothing.
