How do you remove the ignition switch?
« on: February 19, 2012, 10:13:30 PM »

I'm helping a friend remove his inner fairing to get color matched. Now the lower part of the fairing is holding us up. I didn't want to force the switch off, I figured someone here knows the easy way to remove the ignition switch so I can get to that lower inner faring.

What model year is the bike?  It's different for '05 and older models, and '06 and newer models.

It's a 07 street glide. It looks just like the ignition switch on my 2010 sesg.

this turned up on a qwik google ..

1) Insert key into switch and turn to the unlock position. Leave key in.
2) Turn the forks to the left fork stop and rotate the swtich to the FORK LOCK position
3) Depress the small release button at the bottom (left side) with a small screwdriver. Push key down and turn 60 degrees in a counterclockwise direction.
4) Lift straight up.

I didn't want to force the switch off

This isn't a part that can be forced off.  At least not without breaking expensive pieces.  If it could bikes would be stolen all over and keys would be irrelevant.

Glad to help with the video; but, having the Service Manual is the BEST tool at your disposal.  Although there's a lot of helpful info on the web and forums like this, it's rare that the info found is as comprehensive as what's provided in the SM to do the job right.

Good luck with your project.
