How do you reset the ECM?
« on: May 29, 2012, 04:29:47 PM »

I have heard of a number of methods to reset the ECM

1. turn big switch off & on 5 times with in 10 seconds
2. With the "kill switch" on the handlebars set to the run position turn the big ignition switch to the run position for 10 seconds and then turn it off and count for another 10 seconds
3. turn big switch 4 times within 10 seconds all the way to accesory

I am so confused.
I do not have a book so I need the wisdom of the SITE.

First thing I buy when I get a bike is the book.
Used to be just the workshop manual but with modern electrics/electronics ,the owners manual is pretty handy too !
Very good investment !!

If you are just trying to clear any stored codes, you can do that by following the procedure for reading those codes.  Click on the attachment for the procedure.  Otherwise, I'm not sure what you mean by "resetting" the ECM.  Disconnecting battery power for awhile (pull the ECM fuse) will flush anything in volatile memory but not the nonvolatile memory.  What specifically are you trying to do?

Are you going to reset the PC V after this.   Your throttle position will most likely change.

The idle speed adjustment is not something that you can change without programming the ECM. The "learned offset" of the Twist grip is what I think you are talking about. The ECM learns this by the last 4 times the engine was run and there is no clearing it. What you do is start the bike and let is idle, DONOT PUT YOUR HAND ON THE TWIST GRIP. Let the bike idle at normal engine temperature for about 30 seconds and then shut it off. Wait about 30 seconds and do it again. Do it 4 times in a row and the ECM will learn the new average which is as good as it gets as long as you keep you hand off the twist grip.
