Engine identification

Are there identifying marks on a 2002 CVO Road King engine as to whether its a 96 or 103? Currently looking at one to buy and the timing cover has 1550 on it but the owner thinks its a 103. The engine and jugs are powder coated grey.

An 02 CVO Road King should be a 95" motor which is 1550.  103" motors weren't offered until the next year.  96" and the later 103" motors came much later and wouldn't bolt directly in that bike without other significant modifications/changes.

It's a 95" motor unless the previous owner(s) had the then available 103" kit installed.  From my understanding, on years through '06, there were basically two "kits" available for the 88" motor...the 95" kit, which was stock on the CVO 2000-2002 models, and the 103" kit, which was stock on the CVO '03-'06 models.  Perhaps there were some slight differences between the "kit" versions of the engines and the factory produced versions for the CVO bikes...I'm not sure about that.  But cubic inch wise, those were the motors available.  The Twin Cam changed beginning in '07, with a 96" being "standard", a 103" as an easy upgrade, and the 110" on the CVO bikes from the factory, but also available as an upgrade on the 96" motor, though it is an expensive upgrade.
