HARLEY LED tail lights
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:08:05 AM »

Well, I am taking a slightly different path.  I bought what I thought was plug and play LED signals front and rear and after close scrutinization last night and this morning, I have figured out that these are not made for the Convertible.  they are made plug and play for a bike that you want to put bullet signals on and tie them into the center fender taillight like I had on my Heritage.  It has a short 18" harness that plugs right into the taillight with supplied plastic fittings, etc.  Ours have a single wiring harness from the light all the way thru the fender to the fitting just under the seat.  So there is splicing involved.  I believe they will work but I have a question for all those of you that have electrician blood in your veins.........in the picture, it shows 4 wires coming out of the new LED taillamp.  Blue, black, violet, and red/yellow stripe.  Our OEM taillamp on the convertible has blue, black, and violet wires coming out of it.  So, the question is, what might be the purpose of the red/yellow stripe wire??  Would it be needed or not?  Our convertibles have a 3-wire harness coming straight back thru the fender for the left and a separate harness for the right, and a 2-wire harness for the license plate.  I kknow I will have to splice the wires into the harness for each side.  Anybody have an answer for my question??  thanks.  Pork.

If I remember correctly, that is for power and is the running light.  It's been awhile but I believe that is correct.

Are you saying the red/yellow stripe wire is for the power and the running light for the left LED light?  Then do you know what the black, blue, and violet wires are for?  Our convertibles, like I said earlier, have a black, blue, and violet wire going to each light in the rear.  that supplies all the brake light, running light, and signal light.  I'm just not sure what the extra red/yellow stripe wire is for.  Can I just cut if off and would the light still operate correctly?  that is my question.     thankyou for a bit more specific explanation.   Pork.

Hi Porky,

I would take an ohm meter and put it on continuity test.  It will beep when there is a short.  Then measure each wire to your socket.  There should be two pins inside the socket and then a common which is the outer case.  One of the pins is tail light and the other is brake/turn.  I don't know why you'd have 4 wires?  Maybe two go to the outer case.  I would definitely ring them out to be sure.  You don't want to guess and mess up your bike.

Roger that.  Like I said, the MoCo say this rear LED light is not made for the convertible.  It says that on the website; not on the box.  Like I said, our light looks just like it and has 3 wires.  It has 4.  Not sure why.  Something specific to LED??  Wonder if the red/yellow gets spliced together with the black (hot?) wire?  Hope to find out soon.   Pork.

I will take your advice, John.......will be able to get to that right after the big LSU/Alabama game/wedding we are going to this weekend.  Geaux Tigers!  These new units have 4 wires but the entire unit appears sealed (haven't decided whether they are truly Sailor-Proof just yet).  So, I'll see what readings I get.  thanks.  Pork.

Here is what I put on the wifes bike. It was a simple plug and play replacement.

I did the Dynamic Ringz for the front just to add some additional visibility. Becasue you have a can bus you do not need the load equalizer.

I just got the same lights for my 2010 convertible. The service manual shows that the red wire connects to the positive terminal on license plate lamp. My service manual HDI (international) wiring shows 4 wire on each tail light with the 4th wire sharing same power connection as license plate light.
