pulsing front brake
« on: September 30, 2006, 05:55:09 PM »

Ok--I was just wondering if anyone else has warped front rotors?  I just got my bike back from the shop.  They had to replace the rear cylinder head due to porosity.  Now they have parts on order to replace my front rotors.  I like the fact that they are taking care of me but dam.  The number of issues is getting out of hand.  Its a good thing I bought this thing as a toy, and not for transportation.  Anyway--how about those rotors.  Is it just me?   I have 6500 miles on my 06 ultra, and I don't ride like a jerk.  Most of my riding is one up.  I always try to gear down when I know a stop is coming up.  I had an 01 Fatboy with a single front disc and never warped it.

I've heard of a few of the fixed rotors warping, but not the floaters like we have.

Like Brian I've never heard of the floaters warping either. By the design of them they are supposed to not heat up as much, and because they are not fixed to the wheel as solid rotors are they should give some before they warp. Might just be a bad rotor from the factory? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I would have them check the pads and calipers when they replace the rotor just to make sure they are within specs and working properly.

I have had the pulsing on both the front and back.flhrsei2  Was told with the floating rotors highly unusual to see warping.  They replaced the rear rotor and 90% of the problem resolved.  The front is not bad enough to be a concern or even an irritant.

Nothing new to report with one exception.  I called the shop today to make sure they ordered the new rotors.  To no surprise they told me there was some confusion and they hadn't gotten ordered.  I will continue to call every day until someone decides to follow through on what they say.  I think Harley needs nation wide service centers.  These places do not sell any new bikes.  They only concentrate on service.  I took my Acura to a local Honda dealer today for an oil change.  It cost me $15.00 with the coupon I got in the mail.  for that 15 bucks I got oil, filter, and prompt service.  Along with that I got a card for a complimentary car wash, and a customer survey.  Every time I take my Harley in for service its somewhere in the $300 range.  It just blows my mind that for the money we pay, service departments are so universally inept.  I wish I could start a service shop on my own.  A Harley service shop with any degree of competence would clean up the marketplace.  Just about done venting now.  I will keep you updated when the parts come in.

FunSeeker - I's with you 100%, seems my dealer can never get it right the first time & I end up taking the bike back.  They never seem to complain about it but it is a pain in the A$$ to keep taking it in.  I'm now on my third visit to see if they can fix the Oil Temp guage that was installed before I took delivery - it amazes me that even though they have taken it out for a test drive that they could not look down and see that the temp is at zero!!

I have been cleaning the caliper pistons every 3-5k because the lever feel gets poor too.

Do I understand correctly?  You're disassembling and rebuilding the calipers every 3-5K miles?

No, not rebuilding them. Just doing the piston cleaning procedure as instructed on the Lyndall website.

I picked my bike up from the dealer yesteday after work.  I have new front rotors and brake pads.  I didn't know going in but they told me they always replace pads when new rotors go on.  I'm cool with that.  Also I was told that my rotors were .008 out of alignment, which isn't really awful but apparently is out of factory spec.
Hopefully I can get these broke in and they won't cause any more problems.  On a side note, I have discovered one of the service writers with an I.Q. and I only deal with him.  Sometimes when I call I have to wade through a number of other people, but it always pays off to talk to the right person.  This guy is older, which means about my age, and he doesn't give me the Eddie Haskell answers.  What I am trying to say is that my service experiences are improving.
