 :orange:
I just found an answer to a 3 year old question that I had. the Zumo 660 micro secure digital chip would not play through Harley speakers. I put tape on the contact, plugged a dummy plug into the headphone jack on the Zumo 660, moved the rocker switch to the bottom position and the mp3 works great.
follow the instructions. someone ekse may have posted this but it was new to me. :apple:
Both the Harley Road Tech and Zumo 660 branded GPSes may prohibit the MP3 player from working when you place the unit in the cradle. (Update: replies to this post show that newer bikes with Harley's navigation system interfaces and updated Road Tech Zumo firmware may not have this problem) So If you've encountered this problem, once you get the cradle installed and plug your AUX port into the speaker cable on the Harley Road Tech Zumo 660 cradle harness and you get an error message on the GPS when you touch the Media Player icon that says: Use your bike's radio/bluetooth, Connect headphones or remove from cradle - you might want to try this fix.

I'm not sure if it is a conspiracy with Harley and BMW to make you buy iPod options, but to enable this fix on the Zumo unit, flip it over. simply cut a piece of electrical tape about 1/16 inch wide and place it over the 3rd contact from the bottom right (looking at the Zumo from the back). This fools the unit into 'non-cradle mode' and the firmware allows the MP3 player to work as long as it senses a mini-plug in the headphone jack. A photo is attached showing the correct contact to cover.

Now put the unit in the cradle and plug in a dummy mini-stereo jack patch cord into the left side headphone jack (under the rubber flap) and the Zumo cradle/harness mini-jack lead into the AUX port on the Harley radio. Now select the Media Player, then select source until you see your external card (gotta have one, with MP3's installed under the battery door), and at that time, the Zumo should start cataloging the MP3s - sorry it won't find WMA's. Select the song/artist/album/playlist you want and let it rip! Happy tunes!

I would think that you have a bad GPS mount or an open in the GPS wiring harness. The tape on that contact is doing the same thing that the wiring harness does when you plug a 3.5mm male stereo jack into the audio output port on the end of the GPS wiring harness.

Interesting enough, I happened to try playing mp3's in my CUSE today and had a similar situation.  I just left the mp3 on the Zumo play, you could hear it every once in a while...  I will try the tape experiment tomorrow.

If the navigation audio is on, as the voice guidance interacts, the mp3 will play momentarily. But if you follow the original post, the mp3 works in the rocker arm down position.

This post is starting to get confusing.

MP3 songs, XM Radio if you have the 665 model, Traffic and Weather alerts again if you have the 665 model, will only play via the GPS audio output port. You have to connected the audio output to the AUX input on the radio and the radio has to be in the "AUX" mode to be able to hear these audio signals. The Speaker switch has nothing to do with these audio output from the GPS. These audio outputs will play through the helmet headset, Speaker Switch all the way Forward or through the bikes speakers, Speaker Switch in the middle position, or through the helmet headset and bikes speakers, speaker switch all the way back (speaker switch light on) The speaker switch has to be all the way back (speaker light on) for the NIM to work. If the volume on the GPS is turned all the way up to 100% for all GPS outputs (Master, Navigation and Media) and the bikes volume control is turned up (when the radio is in the "AUX" position then you should hear these outputs via the "AUX" mode through the headset or bikes speakers. If you do not then you have a bad GPS or GPS mount/wiring harness. You receive a Y-Splitter and a short 3.5mm stereo male to 3.5mm stereo male cable with the GPS and NIM so that you can connect the GPS audio output to both the NIM and the "AUX" input on the radio so that you will have all audio outputs from the GPS available to you.

Having a Navigation Interface Module (NIM) has nothing to do with these outputs, it will not stop these outputs from functioning only a bad GPS or the mount/wiring harness will.

If you have a NIM and you hear MP3 songs (once in awhile) and you do not have the GPS audio output port on the wiring harness connected to the AUX input on the radio and your radio is not in the "AUX" mode then you have a bad NIM. The NIM is not supposed to pass any audio output from the GPS to the radio other then Turn Prompts. One way to tell if your NIM is bad is if  you hear these outputs and you are looking at the face of the radio and it says "NIM" then the NIM is bad.

I hope this clears this up a little, if I was getting confused I am sure many other were also.

I may have been confused by the post about the Zumo 660 not the 665. Do they behave the same way? Switches etc?

Yes they are the same other then the 665 has XM, Weather & Traffic Alerts, which is way cool.

The only difference between the Garmin Zumo series and the Harley Road Tech series is the Harley has Harley colors, comes with a two year warranty and has the dealer locations installed. You will get a handlebar bike mount with the Zumo series but not with the Harley series.  Harley always breaks apart a kit so that they can sell you all the other parts for a little more $$$. Also only the Harley Road Tech 6xx series will work with the Harley NIM.
