2012 CVO Street Glide tire mileage
« on: August 12, 2013, 03:51:39 PM »

Question for the 2012 CVO Street Glide owners...

What are you getting for mileage out of your front(130/60B19 61H) and rear(180/55B18 80H) tires?
It seems to me that maybe the (newer)Dunlops don't last as long?

I have 19K on the front, and 9K on the (second)rear, I replaced the first rear at 10K.

When I asked the Dunlop reps the same question at Sturgis, they asked "how many miles do you have on them now?"
when I told them, their eyes got REALLY big, and they said "You're doing pretty good..."

On a side note, I talked to several other tire vendors, and they gave me the same story of "not enough demand for that tire size for us to offer one".

On my 2011 CVO SG I got around 15K on the rear (maybe a little more) and just changed the front at 21k.

We ride 2up and together we weigh 275 lbs total.

I'm at 10K on front and back and have plenty of tire left.  Unfortunately, I hate these tires  :-\. I'm hoping Michelin starts making my size when I'm ready for new shoes.   :P

What is it that you don't like about the Dunlops? I haven't found them to be bad at all. :nixweiss:

13k miles out of my rear and front is still good with 15k on it now.  I have been happy with the Dunplops and I am normally a huge Michelin fan.

Not trying to hijack this thread but be sure to check those fronts real good. Another thread on here turned me on to a problem I didn't know about. Cracking at the bead. 9000 miles on mine and sure enough, cracks in the side wall down in next to the bead , can be hard to see. I check mine regularly but never saw them. And I thought I was doing pretty good, lots of tread left. Other than this issue I don't mind the tires.

I got 17500 out of the rear on my 12 CVO road glide, which was lower than I got out of the rears on my 09 CVO Road Glide, same rear tire.

I tend to wonder just how many people are changing the rears prematurely, thus accounting for the wide range in reported mileage.  Determining actual wear is not as obvious with the tires that don't have a center tread groove.

Anyhow, the entire idea behind the MT (Multi-Tread) rear tires is to increase mileage by using a harder compound in the center of the tread and a softer compound on the sides for better cornering grip.  From what I've seen, it seems to work when compared to the previous tires (D402).  Unfortunately for many, the technology also seems to have led to premature abnormal wear at the boundaries of the two compounds.  Some tires have been changed out at very low mileage due to the cupping, not because the center tread was actually worn out.  BTW, the same thing has been reported on other brands of bikes that had the Dunlop MT technology before Harley.  I don't know if Dunlop has ever acknowledged this or corrected it.

Had 13,500 on the rear when I changed it prior to our trip out West.  Still had a good couple thousand miles (at least) left but the rear does quite a bit of the work....don't mind changing it when I "feel" it needs it, tread left or not.  Still, I was impressed with the wear on the rear.
Front is still going strong at 17,800 with still plenty of tread left.  I have checked the beading area and no cracks on mine (and I took a good, long look prior to and after the trip).
Personally, I don't have any problems with the Dunlops.  Seem to work well, last a good, long time and no issues yet in the rain.  Of course, I'm not scraping the mufflers/pegs with it, either... ;D

However, Vickie's Superlow came with Michelins.  I like dem, too.  Wouldn't be against the idea of swapping to the pillsbury brand if they ever come out with our size for the SESG... :2vrolijk_21:

Until my 09 SERG First tire change on every harley I ever owned was to Metzler as I hated the factory Dunlop's, sucked in the rain, poor wear, followed ever grove in the pavement and so on.  Hated the Dunlop's so much I was researching tires for the 09 SERG before I ever took delivery of the bike.  Well after riding the new Dunlop's that came on the 09 SERG for 21000 miles before the rear needed replacing, I decided they were much better than the other Dunlop's.  They did not follow ever groove, had good wear, held in the corners even if a floor board touched, and were pretty good in the rain.

So I have been riding them my last three bikes
