Another (2) Gear Drive Cam Questions??
« on: January 06, 2014, 01:57:27 PM »

'Want to go with gear drive cams in a 113 "sport touring" build on the '09 SERG ~ no more than 10.5-1, S&S crank, Timken, S&S Premium Lifters, Stock 110 Heads(for now), DD7, V&H PowerDuals, PC-V / Auto.

The 255s absolutely did NOT suit my riding style, I really liked the characteristics of the 259s (a little softer on the bottom, pulls well from 3k on up)

1) Other than some noise, and the initial expense, are there any drawbacks to Gear Drive Cams?

2) What Gear Drive Cams will have similar characteristics to the 259s or T-Man 625s ? (I would like a "bolt in" cam that does not require any valve springs or any other head work to work with stock 110 heads ~ if there is such an animal?).

All input is appreciated, as I have to start ordering parts soon...

Thanks

Had my crank done, now it's at 0 run out. Went with S&S 585 ES gear driven cams. Absolutely no gear noise noted. None at all.  Bike rips hard above 3 grand. Lost some bottom below 3. Hoping to get some of the bottom back with a 2 into 1 Pro Pipe and a better tune. Cam is very quiet as well. No more valve train noise. That made me very happy.

I know 2-1 are the best #s , but since the '09 SERG is the first HD with extended bags, and I can't get over a ghost pipe, 2-1 is not an option for me.
Thanks

Wood 888's are available in a gear-driven version, and would be RIGHT at home at 10.5 cr:Scott

How do the 888 compare to the 585's as far as when they con on to power and how they pull in the upper range?  And do you think they are as quiet ( valve train noise ) as the 585's?

They will hit harder, and make more in the middle, and I'd suspect the .585's would edge them out in the hp dept.
Of all the 888's we've installed, no complaints from our clients as far as noise.
Just used a set in a 117"er we did for a Brookfield, Conn. client.
He is absolutely thrilled with the outcome. :2vrolijk_21:

I would highly recommend doing the heads while your at it.  It sounds like your doing everything the correct way, for a few more dollars on the heads, you'll have it all done.

if your looking for something to pull VERY hard thru the middle & up on the top while still having a decent bottom, look at S&S .625`s,set the compression at 10.8-1

What bike do you have?

It's a 2010 SE Ultra Riptide Blue. Love it.
