SENA Headset Speaker Upgrade
« on: May 28, 2014, 05:16:28 PM »

Done! I have pictures!

This is the product I ordered on the recommendation of a friend.

Grab the cushioned part by the edges and twist back and forth till it breaks the internal mount loose.

The mount that breaks is just the center post.

The back of the speaker is oddly shaped. In order to get a usable surface for mounting, I clipped the post and bridge, then filed the plastic smooth.

I used some glue-backed Velcro.

The new units are about 3mm larger in diameter and about the same increase in depth.... But the cone shape fits the Shoei's dished cutout better than the flat-bottom Sena speakers so the net change in height is about nil in this helmet. The larger diameter is also not an issue because the outer edge is wafer-thin and the Shoei dished area opens up pretty well.

The wire used in the Sena units is much more robust than what's used in the Koss. Just clip the wire right at the Sena speakers and solder straight to the mounts on the Koss speakers.

The Shoei makes it easy with its removable liner.

The best part is the sound. Now, I haven't had a ride test yet but the difference in sound quality is outstanding right away. These little speakers have something the Senas never had...bass!
This is definitely a great upgrade and I'll find out soon how well they work out when riding.

My oddly-shaped head strikes again.  The speaker cutouts aren't near enough to my ears, so I'm going to have to velcro the speakers to the fabric covers for the cutouts.

I've been thinking about doing something similar to our HD headsets; hate the speakers we have. Are these Koss speakers better than the HD headset speakers?

It's been 3 years since I've used a Harley headset, but if memory serves the speakers were horrible.  The Koss's should be a vast improvement, and for $10 and a few minutes time, you really can't lose.

Did a Koss speaker mod back in 1996 when I added just the foam/leather surrounds to a set of J&M headsets. Removed just the foam portion and rtv'd them to the speaker. Helped a bunch but don't think that would work on the newer style helmet and mine was a 3/4 Aria.

Searching for SENA 20S info so please let us know.

MrSurly and 05Train,

So what do they sound like?  Do they make any difference, or does road and wind noise still make it hard to hear music?

SENA Headset Speaker Upgrade
« Reply #10 on: July 26, 2014, 10:32:24 AM »

I seem to be constantly upgrading everything on my motorcycle(s). Engine, suspension, seats, bars, electronics, you name it. I've spent a LOT of money on this stuff.
This speaker swap is ~by FAR~ the most bang for the buck I've had.
The sound clarity, tone and volume are greatly improved.
The most important change to me is the "focus" of the output.
The Sena units seemed ( to my ears) to be pinpoint devices. They were VERY sensitive to their placement vs. my ears.
I had to relocate them in the lid  to get the sound into my ears, to the point that the best position to hear them was the worst position for comfort.
The new speakers are like a flood light to the original's laser beam of sound. The new units can be recessed into the helmet's pocket without regard for placement because they just flood the area with sound. They also have the volume to support this and the power handling to suffer less distortion at higher levels.
YMMV
I LOVE the upgrade; I have talked with others who weren't quite as enamored so it's not universal.
Re: distortion: the stock HD radio (2010 ultra) just blows for sound quality. If you get bad distortion in the headset, it's primarily the radio, NOT the headset. Don't turn the radio up loud and the headset volume down to control it, you get a ton of distortion from the radio operating above about 60%.
Instead, keep the sena volume at max and keep the HD radio control at low levels. No more distortion issue and easy use of the handlebar volume control.

I would love to do this, but I'm not sure I would get all the benefit. I ride with earplugs to cut down wind noise.
