4th of July on Coronado, California
« on: July 06, 2014, 10:14:54 PM »

No plans and no efforts.........until I heard on the morning news that San Diego has the largest fire works display on the west coast.  But.....on second thought....not surprising when you think about the large Navy presence in San Diego and here on Coronado.

They load identical sets of fire works on six large barges and then place the barges strategically up and down the bay.  The sequence of the fire works display is set to music so all the barges have to be sinc'ed to go off exactly at the same time.

Besides the Navy's amphbious assult base here, Coronado is also home to the west coast's Navy Seal's base.  Highly recognized and respected by local business and the community.  Here's a few pics I took at work the other day.....

We had to stay up late enough to see what all the noise was about....being the largest fire works display on the west coast. I went up to the second floor balcony and set up my tripod to get these shots.  People started staking out their spots with blackets, chairs, pop-ups, etc. early in the morning and hung out all day just to see the fire works from this side.

Here are several photos that I took before the fireworks, just to show you what our view is every evening....

**NOTE**  Just to the left of center in this photo you'll notice a string of red and blue lights that raise up to a tower in the center.  That's the USS Midway.  http://www.midway.org/    It's now a museum that's open to the public for tour.

And soon the radios blared....."let the fireworks begin!" and the music started..........

These photos shows fire works going off on three of the six barges.  Their timing was definately set to military standard.....

RED, WHITE & BLUE baby!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that all of you had a great Independance Day and weekend and I hope you enjoyed the photo tribute.

I've tried shooting fireworks before but they just kind of fell flat.  After viewing these photos, two things are abunduntly clear.....the background composition has a lot to do with the end result as does the timing of when to press the shutter trip (approx. 2 seconds before I think the next blast is going to happen).  Truth be known.....I deleated a couple hundred shots that just didn't make it.  While the barges timing was spot on, mine was......well.....just a tad bit off.   :nervous:

My old and new home. I lived there off and on on temporary assignment in the early and mid 90's. My home in Poway CA is in escrow and we will be moving to a furnished rent on Coronado. Looking forward to some Orange Ave beer from the Coronado Brew Pub.

Coronado is my 2nd home.  Glad to see your photos.  I read that the Coronado fireworks are about 2-3min shorter than the displays at Seaport Village.  We could see both which were indeed impressive.

On another note, welcome back to Coronado to Spiderman!

Damn I miss San Diego, best place I ever lived! Stationed there on several tours of duty: 1972 - 1975; VF-21 (USS Ranger); 1975 - 1978 NAS Miramar (Instructor Shore Duty at NAMTD), 1978 - 1980 VAW-116 (USS Constellation); and 1993 - 1995 - LPH-10 USS Tripoli.

Make that a big NO for us. Coronado Bay Club Advertises that they love pets but DALMATIANS are not allowed
Dalmatians  The number one mascot dog of all times for Firemen and Budweiser is NOT welcome at Coronado Bay Club apartments. They will not cite any specifics or reasons or anything other than "they're on the list"
