Pinging
« on: December 11, 2006, 11:37:02 AM »

I'm a new to this site and a new CVO over -- 2007 SE Road King.
I just purchased the scoot six weeks ago, and the weather is already cold in Ohio, so may not get much ridding in until spring.

I think my engine has a pinging noise -- more so than my previous HD 2000 Road King Classic.  Are there others with the new 110 ci engine that have a pinging noise?  I will definitly ask the dealership about it when it goes in for its first 1000 mile service -- due now.

Thanks
Doug

Many are having problems with too much heat being retained in the engine on the 07s.  Too much heat can easily lead to detonation issues.  Just a possibility.

There is actually a thread concerning a recalibration on the ECM for the 110ci motors. You may want to check to see if you need this done, and it may take care of the pinging.

Doug-

In your reading, you will find that the 07's run lean from the factory so they can meet emissions.  If the 110's are under the recall, I think the download changes the timing.  Basically, the 07's need richened up.  When your V&H ovals were put on, did the dealer say anything about needing a Race Tuner or PC111 to richen it up?  Some say you can change the mufflers and the oxygen sensors will compensate for the free er flowing mufflers.  Are you running 92 octane in the 110?  If it is pinging in Oct weather, it probably will get worse in the summer.  Hopefully, you need the recall download and it will solve your problem.

d00d, don't forget the extensive thread on "pinking" as well, which although started about an 88" motor that was "pinking" encapsulated many points on the "pinking" issue ::)

Doug,

Fired00d is probably right on the money with the recall idea.  My SERK was built in early November and was not part of the recall.  I have not noticed any pinging, or any of the other issues that some other eariler built bikes had.

Later,
Ghost

Thanks to all who have responded.
Boatman -- I did add V&H exhaust and added their fuel injection computer.  But it pinged before, and continues to ping.  I did receive the re-call from HD -- just haven't taken it in yet -- just got the re-call a few days ago, and weather here in the mid-west is not cooperating for a ride in right at the moment.  Hopefully the fuel injection adjustment will do the trick.

The " recall " is for bikes built before October. They sent out a letter without any service advisory number or anything on it. Bunch of lawyered up bullchit if you ask me. Anyway, I can't speak to the 110's, but my 07 96" was tuned at 14.5 / 1  Incredibly lean and it pinged at altitude with two up. I just did a 103 upgrade and with the SERT dialed in  in the 12's it's not gonna ping anymore. My advice is to get it tuned with either a download ($139) , a race fueler ($275) or a SERT ($460) Your decision on which to use should be based on your plans for the future. A download is a one shot deal. A race fueler is limited in scope as to what it can do, but works well for minor mods. A SERT is a full blown tuner that can be adjusted again anytime you make a mod all the way to a Stage III race motor.

Something to keep in mind is that the Fuel Pak or Power Commander or any of the other aftermarket devices make their changes relative to the base map they find.

Big B, they dont make a download for the 110's that you can pay for like a stage 1 for the other bikes.   His choices are more limited to the SERT / Power Commander / or one of the many DFO / Fuel pack types of products or complete ecm replacements like Zippers / Twin Tech.

I think they did this in compliance with EPA, kind of stupid and yet really smart on their part.

1. they sell more SERT's and can void warranty if they want to if push / shove meet.
2. No longer responsible for warranty on the stage 1's if the motor goes up in smoke.
3. Make 300 per bike more over the download plus rape you on the cables now.  I am actually suprised that they didnt change the ECM Cable to make even more money from those that already had the old cables ...

Yup with the 110's they made it difficult.  Wish it had been just Stage 1 download, pipes / AC would have made life very simple for me.

Save 300 bucks plus a dyno and all the stress of warranty until I do something to the motor.
