Saddlebag Rack
« on: November 07, 2014, 10:52:15 PM »

I got tired of talking towels and laying them on the floor to put my saddlebags on each time I needed to do something that required taking the bags off. Cold day here in NE so took myself off to Home Depot and this is the result. I'm no carpenter so if you like the idea, I'm sure it can be improved upon. What's needed:

2 two foot square pieces of plywood
2 hinges
36" of 1" dowling cut into 9" pieces
A length of 1" diameter pipe insulation
Some soft material (in my case, I cut up a length of my wife's yoga mat but I do not recommend you do the same)
A piece of chain to keep the boards from sliding out
A few screws or staples to attach the mat
A screw driver
A drill and 1" bit ... and that's it.

Nice job. I think I have seen racks for the same purpose as yours for sale on web sites and magazines but I am real sure they cost a lot more than yours.

Thanks! I'm not very handy so when I do something that works, it's a good feeling. Yea, total cost about $20.

I'm thinking that would work good for me. I could use adjustable locations to fit my bags and also fits my wife's CVO Deluxe bags...  Are you locking them down in any way to the board?

Hi FLH91 - no I'm not. I made the dowels 9" long (longer than they really need to be) so there was plenty of over-hang. That, coupled with the slant of the stand, means you would really have to put some effort into knocking them off. I didn't make it for permanent storage, rather, just a safe place to stack them while adjusting my shocks, cleaning the bike, etc. Mind you, it wouldn't take much to lock them down with a bungy - just a couple of hooks, a towel, and a bungy on each side. So far, they are working great and I like that it just folds up and I can stack it against the wall out of the way (with the bike lift, the wheel chock, the tool chest, etc., etc.) never enough room!

Great idea. I was doing the same thing by laying out towls so that I could clean. I'm building one of these.
