AXLES
« on: January 10, 2005, 11:19:09 AM »

Stupid question, do they make axles different lenghts for the same Bike?

Why I ask is that I have added a laydown axle mounted license plate bracket to my Duece.  It fit but I had to remove the cover and the cover hardware.  I am thinking about having the axle cover cut so that it will fit around the mount but I will have to have a longer axle if I do this.

With all the wide tires out there this must be possible.

This is really the only MC board I visit...so Thanks!

I have cruised through the v-twin forum but not regularly, sensory overload.  Just too much going on.  I will give them a shot...now did I register there yet...Let's see...

Generally, aftermarket frame manufacturers make rear axles for their specific frames in a couple of standard (albeit oversized) lengths. This is based on how big a rear tire the frame and swingarm were designed for.

I would suggest getting a longer axle from one of the numerous aftermarket sources (making sure that it fits the bearing configuration of your bike -- sealed rear wheel bearings have a 1" OD axle and tapered rear wheel bearings are 3/4" OD)  and then have it machined to your specific length requirements.
