Hurricanes vs. Snow
« on: September 05, 2004, 08:44:04 PM »

Even though we've had two hurricanes in the past month here in Florida, I'm still thinking it's better than snow....

I really don't care either way--can't ride in either. However, I can surf in either soon after storm passes!

We definitely had some killer waves here yesterday off Tampa and Melbourne...

Good point about the lack of good during-hurricane activities...it gets pretty boring....but at least it's over pretty quick!

As I recall, the birth rate usually jumps about 9mos. or so later.....just like the hurricane....over pretty quick.

I voted snow.  I was born and raised here in the Peoria, IL area but my job took us to Wilmington, NC for 2 1/2 years.  During that short time we must've dealt with a half-dozen or more hurricanes (Bonnie, Floyd, Dennis, etc., etc., etc.).  It even snowed there the second winter we lived there![smiley=lolk.gif]

But back to the hurricanes, I hate 'em!  All the anticipation a week or more in advance, the day or two of the event itself, and then the power outtages and clean-up for still more days/weeks afterward, YUCK!  We're glad to be back in the boring (if not tornado-prone and snowy) midwest. Dang, that IS kind of hard to get around....never having been on a snowmobile I imagine it must be great....but I don't think I'd get used to not riding a bike every day....so like everything else, pros and cons to each, and now I no longer think a full year riding season is as superior as I used to! Still mighty good to be on your bike in January though.... [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I'll take snow anyday.  Never been in a hurricane and don't plan on it.

Never been in a hurricane but have lived with snow all my life.  The snow I don't mind, but the dam cold that comes with it I can do without.  In the last couple of years we have been getting some strange weather patterns that have dumped 3-4 feet of snow in 1 day.  That much snow, ice storms etc. can cause a lot of damage, but probably not as much as a hurricane.  But, at least a hurricane dosen't stick around for months at a time.  I picked the hurricane.

Well, right about now I am leaning towards snow, looking down the barrel of Ivan...we had to cancel our Keys trip since they may not be there next week if this thing hits...God help all in its path...

Sorry to hear about your cancellation.  I was going to book my flights today to Daytona for the bikefest but now I am not sure what to do.  Is it possible that this event would be cancelled due to the horrible beating Florida has taken?

Thanks for the feedback.  I have been trying to get to the Daytona spring or fall event for 2 years now and it never seems to work out for me.  Of course I was trying to ride there each time.  Last year my bike (an Ultra at the time) broke down in Arizona so I never made it. This year I wasn't taking any chances and decided I would fly there.  I am going to take the chance & book it or I will never get there.  Worst case, if it were cancelled, I could help out some friends in West Palm.

I doubt anything but a direct strike would impact Biketoberfest...it does occur while hurricane season is still in effect, but I don't see Daytona being canceled unless it is simply not there anymore.

It's all relative!  I have been through both in my life and it depends upon the conditions.

Bottom Line - One's short lived, however can be long to recover, the other can be short lived, however longer to recover.......Perhaps a TIE?

All the Best to everyone involved in these type matters!

I moved to Milwaukee from the southeast several years ago for work. Having lived in the south for most of my life I found the winters in WI to be unbearable. I have now traded the snow for huricanes and moved to Orlando, FL. The huricanes are much shorter than the WI winters and the huricanes do not come every year!
