Title: Engine rebuild complete but now it wont start and back fires.
Post by: hdrider53 on December 20, 2010, 05:59:18 PM
Just finished doing 95 big bore plus SE MCR heads and Andrew's 54 cams. All went smoothly but unfortunately it wont start.
Turns over fine and cranks but after about 12 seconds of cranking it puts out a pretty loud back fire.
Its a carb bike with the SE air filter set up but carb is stock other wise.  Do you suppose its the carb?
I feel certain I didn't do anything wrong on the rebuild and paid real close attention to getting cam timing marks set up correct.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You don't have the plug wires swapped on the coil, do you?

That's exactly what it was. Lifted the tank and swapped the two wires and she fired right up. I paid close attention to the engine stuff but got tired and sloppy on the last minute stuff. You cant imagine how much better I'm going to sleep tonight.
Thanks a ton man.

Just to answer the as yet unasked question for everyone wondering "which is which" for the day they've forgotten too; on the coil the right side goes to the rear cylinder.

We won't ask how it was on an old Road King that this became so dedicated to memory.  They should put a sticker on this stuff when it's suddenly not dual fire anymore . :huepfenlol2:
