Dropped my bike yesterday
« on: November 11, 2013, 03:24:14 PM »

:-[  Yesterday I tipped over like a Weeble while pulling from the driveway onto the street.  I am glad that damage to my Street Glide is minimal; knocked the skid plate off of the right saddlebag, scratched the bottom rear quarter of the right saddlebag, scratches on the right lower, crash bar, and footboard.  One has to really look for the damage to see it, and most people who don't have an eye for such will never even notice it.  I know it is there though  :bigcry:

Doesn't need a big scratch to hurt... Sorry for you.  As Greg says, we're human...

If it can help, many people are more human than you are !   :P

Sorry man.  Anyone who has been around the block more than a couple times has done it though (or will).  You only skinned the bike's shins rather than yours too.  Sounds like it's minimal too.  Touch it up with match on the paint and clear nail polish over the chrome.  Soon it'll blend in for you too.  Ride on buddy :2vrolijk_21: !

Exact same damage from when I did it. I've since put 12" Yafee handlebars on it and have never done it again. Maybe I'm just REAL careful now.

Sorry about your baby!

Don't feel to bad if damage was very light. Backing in downhill one day, grabbed the front brake..down to the right. Finally got it up, me on wrong side. Told the wife to put the jiffystand down, she said "whats that?" Now the good part........was going to see my Mom-in-law at an assisted living facility. There were 19 seniors on the front porch, 10ft away. Felt like a real rider, as they started clapping. One older gent said "Son, don't ever back downhill with a BSR" All I could say was "Yes Sir"

I dropped mine after 11.5 hours on the road coming home from Sturgis. Wife and I stopped for final gas fill and a quick bite to eat. Came out and hopped on started to ease the bike left and the next thing I knew we were standing over the bike dropped on the left side both trying to hold it off the ground. A guy came running over and helped us lift it back up (it was fully loaded with the tour pak and tour pak saddlemen bag on the rack). Never did find a scratch on it. We held on pretty tight so it didn't completely lay over but it was resting on the highway peg/crash bar!

I dropped mine 2 weeks ago in a gravel parking lot in Westminster, TX. It's a little biker hangout. I rode in with my stereo loud and obnoxius, got lots of attention and laid my baby down. I was all embarrassed, my adrenaline was pumping, I grabbed the Saddlebag bar and the motor guard, jerked it back upright and darn near threw it over on the other side.

As they say, it’s not if you’re going to lay it down, it’s when

Those saddlebag guards more than paid for themselves.

Unfortunately when I dropped mine I didn't have saddlebag guards on it and the pavement did a real number on my bag.  :'(.  The good news is that I sent it to Joe at Xtreme Dimensions and he used his "Magic" to perfection!  Here's a shout out to Joe.  :2vrolijk_20:  :znotworthy: :drummer:  I now have saddlebag guards installed.   ;) ;D

It WILL happen sooner or later.  I've posted this story before but after many years of riding, I finally purchase my first Harley in 1991, 1989 Electra Glide with 32K on the clock.  Rode it down to Road's of Atlanta not long after purchasing (had it about a month) to meet up with some friends.  Was riding the infield and spotted them...they all had G'wangs...rode across the infield to meet them and came up on a ditch.  Stopped to evaluate but stopped on the slope sideways.  Putting down my left foot found nothing but air and down I went.  Scratched the faring a bit on the left corner but that was pretty much it for damage.  The REAL damage was when the other riders came along to help me raise it back up....they all gave the "we have all been there" speach but it sure felt like I was a 2 year old and the older kids were helping me pick up my tricicle.  All my pride went out the window that day.  Learned from it but still...
Haven't thought about that experience so while I'm sorry about you dropping the bike, it gave me a walk down memory lane...thanks for that....

Thanks to all for the replies, I also knew it was inevitable, and have always been told so.  I do feel better hearing the stories  ;)  I have already ordered the touch up kit, when it arrives I'll pick up some 3M Automotive 2-sided adhesive foam pad to stick the skid plate back on and detail the scratches out as best I can

1st time my SEEG fell over (yeah, more then once, once on a bad place to turn and once on gravel) I lamented the story to my "bro".

Most of the response had to do with you need to get some meat on you  - workout - get a smaller bike - yada yada yada

Ah yup - since then he has dropped his - twice  :2vrolijk_21:

Upon returning from a usual ride, hubby proceeds down the driveway.  I stop at the top of the driveway to get the mail, paper, etc.  Put the kick-stand down, hop off.   Crash!?!   Didn't put it in neutral.  Duh.   Sooo mad/upset.  Did not want to get it up and ride it down the driveway.  Was way too ticked off at myself.   Hubby refused to do it for me, so I had to.  That was the best medicine, and 3 bikes ago.   Haven't dropped one since.  Paying way more attention.   Sorry to hear about your drop.   It sucks, but seems to be the "price of admission".

Guess what happens when you are parked in the driveway, and step off the bike to go back into the house to get something without putting down the kickstand?  Yea, BANG! you turn around and look to see your bike on its side.    Been there done that.

I dropped my bike on a road trip back in June.  It fell so hard that both wheels came off the ground and caused $8700 in damage.  I put in a claim with my insurance.  Dealership ordered the parts and I did the labor.  I ended up with a $1700 in my pocket and OEM parts that I sold on ebay.   CVO parts are expensive!  The insurance also paid for a new Garmin 665 which broke when the bike dropped. In the end I had an additional $2200 in my pocket but I wish it never happened.

I'm glad your damage wasn't as bad as mine.
