Rear Brake Pad Replacement
« on: November 25, 2009, 01:02:16 PM »

I'll be pulling the rear wheel off my '07 cuse shortly to have a new tire installed and I plan to change the brake pads at that time.  The shop manual procedure for replacement is with the wheel still on the bike and the caliper in place over the disc - replace the inner pad and then the outer pad.  Question - can I replace the pads with the wheel off?  Seems like it would be easier but not sure if there would be other problems encountered doing it that way.  TIA

Sure.  Compress the caliper and unscrew the pins.  They might even fall out.

I nearly always replace pads at a tire change.  It's not hard with the tire there.  But it's easier with it gone.

That's what I thought.  Thanks Don.

If you keep up on your master fluid level regularly and haven't changed the pads for a while, keep an eye on the master fluid level when compressing the calliper. With too much fluid in the master, the calliper won't compress fully with the lid on, and it will overflow with the lid off.
(Don't ask how I know this)

I would not but I have a pretty good idea.  But since I have never checked the fluid level much less topped it off then hopefully that will not be my fate.   :)
