Vibration ???
« on: June 16, 2008, 11:12:56 PM »

I recently had my dealer install a SE 6 speed gearset and harley's primary chain auto tensioner in my 06 CUSE, I have noticed some driveline vibration in 5th gear about 60-65 mph at a 2800-3000 rpm and also in sixth gear on roll on. Even though auto tensioner is self adjusting is there a set torque setting that the
Mo Co. Suggest's at install ? Any other similiar experiences out there ?
Any and all feedback welcomed.
Thanks Riders.

The HD tensioner can be set too tight and if so can cause some vibration.

Jim,
Is that a simple fix ? Or, Are the tolerances on each tensioner different ?

You take the outer primary cover off, reset the tensioner to the caged position (as it came in the box), and release again.  Sometimes when they are installed they over tighten.  They are spring loaded and self adjusting-no manual adjusting.  When they adjust correctly, they are fine.

Hopefully someone else might explain it better.

I think the biggest problem with the H-D tensioner was the fact that the initial setup was wrong on many.  Some guys just threw it in and screwed it down.  The proper method was to adjust it manually during the install to approximately 1" chain play, then release the pin and let the spring do it's thing.  If it was tightened down without free play in the chain, as the engine heats up the chain becomes tighter and the tensioner cannot back off.
