Does this sound like a stock SE 103?
« on: October 31, 2010, 09:19:48 PM »

I bought an 04 SEEG a couple of weeks ago and have been unable to talk to the previous owner, so I don't know if any motor work has been done.

This bike has a Screamin Eagle air cleaner, and the SE pipes (Kerker?) with the removeable end caps. I have no idea what's inside that I can't see.

I ran it harder today than I've ever run it.  My wife and I were riding today and once when I looked in the mirror she wasn't there. I pulled over an waited a minute, then turned around and took off to see about her.

Now my question ... This thing was pulling hard right through the 5400 rpm reline up to 6000 rpm, which is as far as I pushed it, and was still pulling very hard at 6000 rpm. By the way, 6000 rpm in 4th gear is over 100 mph on the speedo.  Shifted into fifth and it was over 110 right now and I shut it down for a curve.  Does this sound like a stock SE 103 with only stage 1 mods?  I suspect I've at least got a cam upgrade in there.  I plan to open the cam chest soon and find out for sure.

The wife is fine, just did one of those inexplicable "woman things" ... she stopped to take off her helmet and scratch her head.

pull off one of the intake pushrod covers and measure the lift of the pushrod

easiest way to tell if one has been changed

I really miss my 103. It must have a power commander or SERT to get the RPMs. I think my RPM limiter went to 6400 with the pcIII.

Stock rev limit was 5800 rpm, and with the "Race" download from Harley, or the PCIII, that was bumped up to 6200 rpm.

The valve lift spec for the stock SE253 cam is .538" btw.  If you measure cam lift at the pushrod or lifter as suggested, be aware that the number won't match the published spec for the stock cam due to the rocker arm ratio.  You will need to calculate the lobe lift.

Sounds like it to me. I have Rhinehart True Duals, Thundermax EFI controller and a stage 1 air cleaner. I had mine up to 135 once. I just twisted the throttle in 5th gear and away whe went! It pulled hard up to around 115 then it just pulled good. At just over 120 it started to pull really hard! I ran out of highway at only 5500 rpm so I don't know how much faster I could go. My rev limiter is set at 6200 rpm.
Everything else is stock except the tour pack. I had that custom painted by Chad's Customs in Daytona Beach.

I've been looking into a fix for the spring loaded cam chain tensioners.  I had just about decided on a gear drive setup when I discovered that the H-D hydraulic conversion allows you to re-use your stock cams (not true for the gear drives or Andrews hyd conversion).  I am very happy with the way this thing runs, so I'm going with the H-D hyd conversion and sticking with the stock cams.  That way I have no expense for cams, retuning, or EFI controllers.

Now I'm going to focus on some upgrades for the wife's 05 Softail Deluxe.  I *know* she needs more power  8)

Was that 135mph measured by a gps, by chance?  Where was the needle on the 120mph speedo, or did you take a glance down to see it?  :-\ har.  spyder

When we were doing the 575's they were measured at 630 clearance for the springs.  There should be some old posts on this unless they were deleted.

I did some cypherin' with the tach and lower speeds. I didn't look at the speedo after 120. What a runner this thing is!

S&S 570 with cleaned up heads

Zippers 575 only

on some motors the valves hit the pistons with these cams. Might have to cut pistons

i don't know how, but my 103 seems to keep getting better all the time.  570 S&S cams, cleaned up heads along with a good tune and runs fantastic. Stage I air cleaner and True Duals. Runs no where as hot as the new bikes. I'm ready to pile on some miles next week too. See you in MV. :2vrolijk_21:

Sounds like a good plan, not sure if I'll be on that ride or not.  I just go with the flow depending on how I'm feeling after the ride up to MV.  Ride safe & watch the cages & critters.  spyder

My 03 100th Anniversary 103 SERK - hits the limiter at 6200, No PC in it.
Will keep on digging to 120 mph and that's as far as my speedo goes.
It has the SE Street Performance Touring Exhaust and K&N Air Cleaner

I may do a Dyno some day just to see where I am at on the numbers.

Wouldn't trade it for anything else.

Hey Spy. If you end up on that ride to Lake Lure let me know either way.  If not I'll be looking for you Thursday nite in MV.  Looking forward to that.   Have a good ride over too and rise safe.   :2vrolijk_21:
