Airbags on Motorcycles?????
« on: December 31, 2005, 04:02:55 PM »

Just got Feb edition of Rider Magazine and was looking at the 2006 review of the Goldwing and I see that a airbag option will be available in spring of 2006! Has a picture of it deploying with a rider on the bike. Looks like one of them exercise balls sitting between the fairing and the riders face. Says it can reduce the riders velocity as he leaves the bike in a frontal impact which involves about 95% of all motorcycle accidents that involve another vehicle.

I believe I would be a bit nervous hitting a bump with a bomb ready to go off in your face. Although if I was about to slam into a stopped vehicle (As some here have experienced) I would welcome this huge exercise ball exploding from my dash and kissing me in the face!

After reading this I began to think (and as my wife says That in itself is dangerous) This Airbag thing is good but if it is going to throw you from the bike anyhow, why not have a little control!I then in visioned another device. How about an ejection seat with a mini parachute to be able to control your decent out of harms way! Thought it to be a great alternative ...unless your in a tunnel or under a bridge. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Oh well, what's your opinion?

They also have a 6 cd player, GPS, Heated backrests and seats with independent control, and foot warmers (heat from engine blown at your feet). Base price $18,999 to $22,799 with all the factory options (less airbag option). Some good ideas I would like to have on my CVO.

Thanks for the picture of this thing being deployed. I remember first reading about this on the wing thinking maybe a better option would be a big bubble that would inflate around you with a harness system keeping you centered inside the bubble, like a bubble boy.

Just curious if anyone thinks this will do much?

I happen to have experience with the sudden decceleration event in 2000 on a dresser.....A Pontiac Grand Prix pulled out from a side street about 30 feet in front of me then stopped. I had no where to go and travelling at about 50mph left 20 feet of rear tire rubber on the ground and a fistful of front brake. The braking had me lifting in the saddle. When I hit, smack dab in the center of the drivers door,  I took flight from the saddle and my helmet impacted hard in the door/roof line of the car leaving a nice impression of my noggin. This happened after I left the bike up and had started lift off over the fairing. I went on to bounce off the roof in perfect handspring form completing yet one more complete revolution coming down 30 feet later on the blacktop, again helmet first. That lid probably saved me twice in one accident (along with a hard head).

Anyways, looking at that airbag pic and thinking back to what I was told happened in my accident ( I dont remember a thing ), I think it would have been about the same outcome. Maybe if it were bigger it would come between you and whatever you were impacting, but honestly I think its a ton of money for a gimmic. I've always thought an ejection seat with quick release parachute might be about the only thing that could get your butt out of a tight situation fast enough.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Ceej;
I have to agree with you, I do not think the bag would, in your situation do anything for you. Glad your still around to tell your story

You can get info on that vest in the other thread posted above, I don't know the vest would do much more than proper riding gear but the inflating neck brace makes sense, Wore them when I raced go karts and saw a few guys happy they were required. The problem with the whole concept is it has to be attached to a "rip cord" attached to the bike - in this case they use a seatbelt type connection, I can just see getting off the bike for gas and getting inflated!
