What to pack for roadside repairs
« on: January 03, 2006, 11:42:45 AM »

The thread on slime or plug got me thinking. [highlight]What do you old road dogs pack [/highlight][highlight]to handle most roadside breakdowns ? [/highlight]I know I have my list of stuff which includes, tools, spare fuses, flashight, some misc pieces of elec wire, zip ties, tire plugs, CO2 and a bubble pack of builder's hardware ( Takes about a 1/2 " of space against one sidewall of a saddlebag or under the tour-pak liner ) I usually devote the botton 1/2 of one saddlebag to this stuff.

I carry about the same, and a baggy full of bolts, nuts and washers from the parts I have replaced, oil and blue stuff.  I just added a spare jiffy stand spring.

This is always an interesting thead to watch in the other sites that I used to visit.  I don't carry a whole lot (in comparison to when I rode before the Evo motor) but I do carry the basic tools and now carry a small siphon pump (hose) that I got at Pep Boys, for the long hauls on the back roads.

There's been more than a couple times that I was holding my breath pending the next unknown gas station (that was open), thinking about throwing stuff off of my bike just to lighten the load, to get better milage. [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  So far, I've never ran out, without making it to a gas station.  However, I did have to "coast in" on two different occassions.

In addition to the previously mentioned...I use 35mm film containers to put spare bulbs in. And don't forget a muffler clamp or two! Also along with the zip ties, a bungy cord, and about ten feet of small diameter rope. (the rope helps to tie-down the unexpected buys)
It also depends who is going on the journey with us...Sometimes I have to be prepared for the repair of their rides.

Don't forget the H.O.G. card, cell phone & TUMS

Yep, my left saddlebag is way over the max. weight limit due to tools and repair stuff.  Rawhide shoe laces can come in handy.  A coil of fuel-tank hose and sized clamps. Spare plugs. I don't have one, but I've seen a belt repair kit.  Has anyone got experience with one of those?   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  spyder

the 'clean-breaks' in belts that I've seen were in burn-out pits.....never personally seen one from on the road.

The only time I saw someone use one of those temp belt kits, it came apart 20 miles down the road. I watched my bro install it and he followed the directions to the letter. I also rode behind him and he eased the bike through the gears, so after that I decided that unless the one kit my bro bought was defective, these things were a gimmick at best and a ripoff at worse. My personal experiences with bad belts have all been of the lose a tooth, lose two teeth, lose three teeth etc etc variety. Never had the belt itself break. Soooooo I don't worry about this (knock wood)

damn, that cost me another $70. I jus had to click on the link. Everytime I come in this place it cost me money. It's as bad a going to the H-D dealer. So many good ideas and so little time. ;D
Hey, is that H-D OCD or what? [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
Now, back to obsessing about more chrome.

I usually make sure OTIS is a participant.  He's got the tools and supplies. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  I carry the chocolate, chewing gum, cell phone, baby powder, water, anacin, pepcid, ear plugs, and eye drops, and all the other chit we buy along the way for gifts, and such. ;)  If I break-down alone, I'm screwed. :'( [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  Later--HUBBARD

You guys got it all wrong. All Hub would do is call AAA to come pick up the Denali and the trailer. ;)
