Planning a visit from over the pond
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:44:30 AM »

Ok, so myself and a mate or two are planning another ride in your back yard (USA). In 2008 we left LA visited La Jolla then inland & back up to San Francisco Via the PCH 1 and Yosemite. Bikes were rented from Eagle Rider. We had a great time, and are looking to do it again next year around July.

So i'm asking for suggested routes / itineries / favorite roads etc. Its's a boys only run, but need to meet our Ladies at Las Vegas at trips end  :(. We're thinking about 8 days on road.

We'd like to do a good stretch of desert riding. Monument Valley, Death Valley??? etc.   So, over to you guys. Would be very interested to see any ideas you may have for itinearies / routes / favourite roads etc. Maybe starting at Milwalkee???, in reality though we have a few beers every night, so late starts are on the cards.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Cheers.   :drink:

Welcome back to the U.S. You don't mention what time of year you're coming over but in the dead of summer I'd avoid the desert and instead do the the Rocky Mtns. Start somewhere around Glacier Nat. Park, work your way down to Yellowstone and then the west side of Colorado. Weather depending, you can't go wrong in the mountains.

Agree with Screamin, since you are coming in July it would be best to avoid the desert areas, as temps can get pretty high. Stay north in the mountain areas...keep us posted! You may also want to look at Route 66..(the old route 66 out of Chicago...) that'll take you through all kinds o' terrain...

There are so many places to ride, depending on time I'd pick an area that you can ride and spend some time exploring instead of just riding all over the place and only seeing a little. I'm partial to the Colorado mountains, and the ride out to Zion National Park area. Here's a map of a ride we are going to take in the future. The desert is hot, but I enjoyed it but I don't have a faring or windshield either!

Well, that is the desert, on the way to Monument Valley, the mountain areas of Colorado are much different of course, then it takes you past the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National park, and the map doesn't show it, but Bryce canyon and them on to Moab. There are pictures on the map along the way, by clicking on more in the top left of the google map or you can move the little man above the slide bar anywhere on the map and see a street view of the area.

One other thought, if you plan on going to many national parks you can buy an annual pass and possibly save some money.  http://www.nps.gov/fees_passes.htm

Sounds good Marty, we'll see how it pans out. Seems like we may even have to end at Las Vegas, not sure. But will take and send pics along the way.  Hope fully you can turn the weather on for us, not planning on getting wet. Is it worth visiting the HD factories or museum ?

The factories are factories. But the museum is well worth it. Milwaukee is one of the friendliest cities we have ever visited.
