Dealerships may think they are getting more money by going above msrp, but in the long run they are losing business. I deal with customers every single day. I am a business owner and my business depends on sales. The other thing I consider when selling is customer loyalty (repeat business plus positive recommendations to others), plus residual sales in the future for mods, service, clothing, etc, etc.
I had a great relationship with a particular salesman and dealership. Went in looking to trade in my 09. They quoted me well below average for my trade plus 4K above msrp for a 2013 ultra cvo. This dealership got over 4K last year alone from me in services, accessories, and clothing. So, they not only lost the sale but all the residual business. This was from a new sales manager who had been brought in to "clean up" their poor sales reputation. hahaha
Found the bike I wanted, got it for $600 under msrp, no extra charges above msrp for anything, and I got 3K more for my trade. They gave me a $200 gift card and my 1k and 5k service included, plus 20% off any HD stuff and 15% off any non hd stuff that they carry.
If you shop around and are patient, you can get a reasonable deal, especially in this economy
