New trailer!
« on: December 28, 2007, 01:45:50 PM »

Just won the bid on a new trailer.
I have the big one and the small one but one this size is real convenient.
It's a Haulmark Edge 7 X 12 with "V" nose.
Here's a few pictures.

Nice to see you keep the economy going Chip.  Haulmark makes a real nice trailer and the V nose gives you a little room to move around the front of the bikes and for additional storeage.   :2vrolijk_21:

The V-Nose coupled with the side door would be real handy during tie-down and for extra general space up front.  My little all fiberglass Excalibur trailer with the raising lid works great (enough) for a single bike on the rare occasions it's needed.  But if I suddenly found myself with red SERGs and SERKs aplenty I'd have to consider something like this as a great way to get two bikes somewhere.

Oh..NO!  You bought an inferior trailer, 'cause it had Harley colors on it.  Them Haulmark dudes know how to market, don't they?  You're haulin' $50-60,000.00 worth of Motorsickles around in a $2500.00 trailer, hooked to a $45,000.00 Truck!  Kinda' like a "turd", in the Champagne, ain't it?  Then, there's the "SCARED", word.  WTF are you talkin' about?  Just 'cause I can't galavant around the country on a whim like you can, ('cause I ain't got a 1000 Mexicans workin' for me), you taint the reputation of an UNDEFEATED, 1070 lb., Bagger, namely, "Ol' Maudie."  Surely, you jest.  While you, and eveyone else, may take some comfort in ya'lls investment in the endless pursuit of HORSEPOWER, I've been workin' my a$$ off.  Yet, I remain, at this point in time, at the helm of my reign.  That said, it remains to be seen who can dust the Ol' Girl.  And, if that AUGUST event ever does come to pass, which I doubt, it will only happen that one time.  My schedule will determine whether or not I come to MV, not fear.  I do commend you on all of your efforts on puttin' all that together, though.  You've done well.  :2vrolijk_21: Later--HUBBARD

Ilene and I met Chip, Nancy and Robert this afternoon to pick up the new trailer.  Nice trailer Chip!

We had a nice lunch and got to visit for a while.  It was great seeing you guys!  It was really nice to finally meet Robert too.  Nancy, I'm sure you're very proud of Robert and you should be!

We are home!

Around 650 miles and almost 640 of them in the rain.
No complaints here though.
We need the rain!

I bought this trailer listed on Ebay as a Haulmark Lowhauler 7 X 12.
It has all the whistles and bells, smooth exterior, finished interior, Cabinet with clothes hanger, diamond plate everywhere, mags, tandem axle brakes, etc.
Probably half of the thousand times I looked at the pictures on Ebay I thought, that looks bigger than 12".
At lunch today I told Bob that it looked longer than 12'.
He agreed, but we both figured it was the v-nose throwing our perspective off.
After 12 hours driving in the rain we got it home in it's space.
As I was walking to the house I thought, I need to get the tape and check it, it just looks longer than 12'.
It measured 14'. I went and looked at the title. Title read 7 X 14. I measure it again. 7 X 14!
I called Bob and asked him to measure his 7 X 12 trailer. It measured 12'.
 WOW!
I have a 7 X 14 trailer that was sold as a 7 X 12 with all the whistles and bells and all serial #'s match and
it's a 7 X 14.
We all work hard to get what we want but every once in a while we get lucky. Today must have been my day.

I have to finish up by saying that a soggy day was made very bright by our seeing Bob and Ilene. They met us before we picked up the trailer so I also asked Bob to check out the trailer. Bob and Ilene it was a pleasure to see you today.
We will work on that vineyard trip in the spring!

Chip,

Nice trailer, I have a Edge low hauler, but mine is not a V noise, I have to agree that the V noise has more junk room and makes it a lot easier to tie bikes down. I ordered ours just plan black and put mine own twist to it. I think that you are going to like it just fine.

Took it to the car wash today (still on water restrictions).
Brought it home and waxed 1/2 of it. (that's a big beech to wax)
Bob (Tbone) made me jealous when he said he "Glared" his so I had to put a little wax on mine.
Let me ask this of you.
I'm out of room so it has to stay outside so how do you keep yours clean?
A big "Northern Tool tarp seems a little tacky and may invite condensation.
How do you protect the finish on yours?

I know a contractor/developer that I could put you in contact with. :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:

Seriously though I don't think you would want to put a tarp on it that wasn't able to let moisture out. You may want to check w/a RV dealer/supplier to see if they have any type of covers for those that have the ability to let moisture out and not harm the paint.

Chip did the v-nose make that much of a difference on fuel mileage. Thinking of making a bolt on v-nose for flat face trailers that people could just bolt on.

I really don't know.
The powerstroke gets around 17 on the road empty.
Pulling the equipment trailer and a skidsteer it goes to around 14.5. (trailer and skid steer are 7800lbs)
Coming home with the Haulmark I got 15.7. It only weighs 1700 lbs. but I had it on cruise at 80.
So as I said I really don't know. I would hope it would be better but I also think the V nose makes the trailer more stable.
But if you make them I would be willing to try one on the big trailer.

Had the Banks kit on the last 3- 6.0l Fords. They got the same mileage but would pull the house down :2vrolijk_21:  Maybe towing mileage was 1 mpg higher...and we towed the boat "21,142lbs" total combined weight, alot faster and harder than the stock truck.

It's stock!
Recently sold a mini excavator that was 8800 lbs. and with 2000 for the trailer with the 100 gallon tank on the back I got 13mpg.
Can't imagine towing a 12000lb. boat though, that would be scary.
I would be afraid it would be like the tail waggin the dog.

I also had a Chevy 6.0 gas truck that would get around 17 on the road.
It would pull a load as fast as the Powerstroke but with a load the 17 mpg would go to 6 to 8mpg.

And I asked this earlier and was wondering since of lot of you have Haulmarks.

When they are left outside do you put a cover over them or what do you do to protect them from the weather?

Chip,
When I had my Haulmark I didn't have a choice but to leave it outside. Didn't try to cover it, but the paint didn't hold up well in the elements. Wasn't a V-nose just a low-hauler, but the front top painted part that curved back to  flat top really took a beating. Not sure if was just a thin coat of clear or what, but it developed a clouded up look. :(

 :nixweiss:     :nixweiss:     :nixweiss:     :nixweiss:

I think if you tried to cover it up you're asking for some moisture damage, but at the same time you're going to get some U/V damage to it if you don't.  We've got an older Haulmark car trailer that's red.  It sat out for the first 4 or 5 years that we had it.  By the 3rd or 4th year, the fiberglass cap on the front had turned extremely milky and faded, like what Gary is describing.  It never really bothered the sides to where a good buffing wouldn't bring the color right back, but that cap had to be re-painted.  Friends had a black on that did the identical thing, so it was the material, not the color.

The other thing that happened was it had some seam sealer on the top that had to be re-applied about every other year.  It would flake up and start to look like chit.  It was sort of a nasty process to have to scrape the old off and put new on every once in awhile.

What's the construction of the thing?  With the v-nose, if it is all the vertical panels like are on the sides, it might fair pretty well outside.  If not, I'd just let it go and deal with the consequences later.  Pretty trailers are nice and look good behind big trucks, but sitting outside isn't going to affect the way it protects the bikes you'll haul inside, and that's the part that counts.

How hard would it be to build a frame for a tarp....just to get it above the trailer surface so air could circulate......let the tarp be sacrificial for the UV light.  Put some of those 1,000 illegals ( that Hubbard says you have) to work over in your neighborhood.  :huepfenlol2: har!

It seems like Chip and Nancy need something even bigger, to hold all the trailers and boats, then the garage could hold the bikes, and mustang and the shed could house the scooters.

Ken just made me think of something.

Chip you could look into renting a storage space at a U-store it or similar type place where you could keep the trailer inside. :nixweiss: May not be the most convenient, but it's a way to get the trailer out the weather.

Thanks guys!

I am out of room so a covered storage area would work.

I'm still thinking what Bob (Tbone) said about "Glaring" his trailer.

So Bob look at the next two pics and see if your fenders are this shiny.
(this will give something to do in your spare time)

A couple more times of rubbing and they will be a shiny as some call "Show polished".

It looks great Chip! I like those wheels...

My fenders were shined up a few years ago but I lost interest in keepin the trailer clean due to laziness. It seems to only get so dirty then just sits.  It is a 7 x 14 low hauler, no vee, no complaints and it still looks ok.

The left side fender is now a little lumpy and the marker lamp is missing due to a blowout last week in Leesburg.  Carry spares!

Que cera cera!  Happy New Year.

 :2vrolijk_21:

Chip, great job on the fenders!  :2vrolijk_21:  It looks like I've got a little work to do to get mine up to speed.  Here are a few pics of mine.

You need a bigger garage!
Nice trailer though.
Looks like there's been some polishing done on the metal trim.  :2vrolijk_21:

I like the flow of the silver themed bikes on the left and the others on the right.
Where you gonna put the scooter when we finally talk you into buying two?
We are also working on Craig and Martha to buy some.

I'm working on the garage, if I can just get the contractor to get started.

The scooters would be fun.  I've only ridden one once and it scared the chit out of me 'cause I couldn't see the ground.  Ilene would love it though, she wants one to go grocery shopping on.  ;D

We have a blast on them.
Put them on the dyno after we got them.
Guess how much horsepower?
Not enough to spin the drum and get a reading.
They are the most fun I ever had going slow!

 :2vrolijk_21:

I'm sure they're a lot of fun, especially if you have a good place to ride them.

Chip,

I keep mine under a carport that I had built onto my motorcycle play house, I took mine to a detailer after I bought it and had a real hard coat of wax applied to it. I was told that it would be easy to keep clean. I have pulled it over 6,000 miles and it cleans up real ez.

For what its worth, Thats what I did

S/B and T-Bone-

Now that you have the aluminum fenders polished, seal them with Sharkhide and they will look like that for many years.  Sharkhide is a clear sealer made for aluminum pontoons to keep them looking like new.

All you have to after polishing is clean fenders with lacquer thinner to take off the oils and apply Sharkhide with a soft lint free cotton cloth such as a baby diaper.     www.sharkhide.com

Just a thought unless you like polishing all the time.

I hate it when you post!

Then I remember I'm on restriction.
Then I think well maybe she will believe dOOd made me buy another bike.
Did you know there's a bike just like yours (not as nice) on Ebay!
I know cause it's on my watched items list.
Just gotta wonder how much I can blame on dOOd?

Chip I must have missed it, but what did you use on the fenders to get them that way?

I have an aluminum boat trailer that drives me crazy every time I look at how ugly the I beams are

Chip,

I'm finding I missed a lot of things while in the mountains for the holidays.  Great looking trailer.

For the short term and to avoid the moisture issue Brian mentioned with a tarp you might want to consider a Travel Trailer/Motorhome cover that is used for storing RV's.  They seem to breath enoguh to avoid the moisture being driven into a painted surface and protect against the UV issue as well.

On another front, I am hauling 6 bikes to Arizona for some guys up here in May when we all go to Sedona.  I need to lay out the 24 foot Featherlite with Condors or the like and I saw the set up in your trailer.  Anyone have a pic of a bigger trailer and the layout for a bunch of baggers (chocks/tie down points etc)?

I can't help on a picture, but basically I drew out the trailer floor plan on my garage floor to size, put my bikes in it and figured what was needed as far as Condor and tie down placement and then went to the trailer.

I highly recommend the Condor chalks.

Good idea on the garage floor layout.  I have a friend that had a 24 foot with the Condors, I like them a lot and most likely will go that way.  Each guy is paying me $600.00 for the haul, so I figure I can break out on the cost to set up the trailer.

I've been considering selling my current one and getting a new one, this one is 6 years old and has around a 100k on it.  You really can't tell it other than the usual wear and tear you get with many different employees using it.

May is getting closer than we think though so I better get moving on it or I'll be in the garage the night before we leave finishing it up.

Roger-

The best place I have found the Condor's is a small company on Ebay that sells them from the East coast (I think NJ) .  They also have the D rings and backing plates for the d rings.

I replaced those usless pingles with Bike-Pros in my Edge.  They were a little cheaper but not as nice as the condors.  They have worked fine for over a year now and I like the ride into and hop off thing.

Never even been in this thread till just now.  Got a call today from a friend.......told him I'd saw the title but didn't even go into it.  Trailers don't really turn my crank (or anybody's from out west).

I wish Chip lots of good luck with his new trailer..........I'm sure he'll make a hit at the Maggie Valley Trailer Rally. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:   Hell, he'll probably knock somebody else out of first place with this trailer. :nervous:

There.  That's more like it. ::)

The West Coast gang are all closet trailer lovers if you ask me.  They'll load 'em up whenever it's convenient for them and then bad-mouth them the rest of the time.  Hell, I think Rjob749 has the largest trailer of anyone here (6 bikes! :shocked2:) and last time I checked, Washington state is on the West Coast :o, but to hear JC talk, trailers don't really turn anyone's crank from out west. :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:

I don't think they recognize Washington as being part of the US let alone the west coast. :huepfenlol2:

Besides, it all is really about time, if you have the time to ride there great, if not get someone to haul the trailer and meet them there.  I know I could ride to and from the Sedona GTG, but I'd only be able to have one beer and turn around and head north.

I am building a trailer for a cross country trip this year.  I would appreciate anyones input.  I have purchased a Haulmark FVN 7X22.
I am building what my sons call a Hippie van.  We plan a full kitchen, bathroom in the trailer.  You can follow the build at this blog my son set up.

Any sugestions will be appreciated.

Roger we wouln't have had near as good a time since the party started from your room and the big bottle of Patron/Crown Royal/Rum ect... that set the mood for the good time we all had by the pool. And we also wouldn't have had the cool sombreros to wear.
