Fender Trim Strips
« on: February 05, 2012, 11:04:09 AM »

As I wait for delivery of my SG (1st March) in Hot Citrus to replace my '07 SERK, I'm looking at the various touring seat options. I will probably go for the Sundowner deep bucket seat (51630-09A), but was wondering if the removal of the fender trim strips is necessary? Been exchanging emails with NGH who did not need to remove his, but his seat is not a Sundowner. Any advice guys?

Sorry if this has been covered previously, but couldn't find anything to refer.

Yes, I know what the book says and thanks for that. I guess it wasn't clear in my first post, I was asking if it was actually necessary to remove the strips, as another member said he didn't need to.

Ask him how he did it. that should answer your question, that is if it is a 2012 model

My question is, what is the fender strip.
From the installation photos I can't figure what it is.

There are two chrome and rubber strips that are on the rear fender.  They are so when you put the passenger pillion on, it won't be sitting on the fender.  Also, they look a lot better in the solo mode then having the clear plastic protector on the frame.

They had to come off for the corbin to sit all the way down. Jim said they were two sided taped on.

I just ordered the Corbin solo and p-pad and was going to try to get it to work with those strips. I orderd the strips for my '11 since I like the look and the fact that the pad won't touch the fender....hope it works :nixweiss:

I have a Corbin SoloTour on my bike, and I did NOT have to remove the fender strips for it. It fits right over them, and the rear bracket sits right on top of the bolt hole in the fender. I also have a H-D Hammock seat for two-up riding, and it fits over the fender strips as well.

I can't comment on any other seats. Even though on the H-D site it says that you have to remove the fender strips to install the Hammock seat... you don't. I've had it on the bike over the fender strips, and it fits just fine.

Let us know how that works out.  Looks like some of the one piece seats work fine as they use the stock rear mounting screw to attach.  Wondering how the P-pad will work using Corbins locking system.

JCZ:  if your reading looking at your seat do you think there is enough slack under the p-pad for this to work with the strips attached?

Corbin changed the mounting system for their passenger pads recently. I thought i was getting both seats with matching locks, but I got a call from hd-dude after I ordered telling me that they no longer offer the p-pad locking on to the rear fender. It seems the clearance problems with 2 up tour packs caused them to re-design the pad to mount exactly as the stock one does--using the rear fender screw. For the amount of time that I use it I was not concerned...as long as the solo seat still locks I'm happy.

The last classic solo I did on a 12 SESG the strips had to be removed as they held the seat off the frame bumpers. They can be reinstalled a bit further back to clear the seat pan.

That sucks that's one of the main reasons I wanted the Corbin over the other brands. I guess when I'm ready I'll have to find a used p-pad and locking mount. bummer    There website still shows it as locking guess they haven't updated yet. post some pics when you get it please.

Then it's a good thing I decided that I would wait for my seat to arrive before putting those strips on

I had to remove the fender trim strips to install my Corbin solo tour seat.
I assumed there was some "variance" from seat to seat where the rubber bumpers are mounted.
Not a big deal, can't see them under the seat anyway...

Are you sure?

I priced these strips out from my dealer, and have different part numbers from their parts books.

51761-10 - Trim, Pillion Mount, Chrm
51760-10 - Trim, Pillion Mount, Rubber

Total for all the pieces going through Lake Shore HD was about $100, if I recall.

Got them out of the 2012 CVO street glide parts book......and something else just hit me....those part numbers end in "-10" which would mean they came out in 2010...these trim peices didn't come out until 2012 so they have the new style part numbers.

I am thinking they may have been stock on the CVO Softail Convertible. I was thinking the same thing on the PN ending in 10.  But the CVO SG and CVO RGC only started this year with the 2 piece seat...

Either way, I like the price of your part better, if it's the right one..

Confirmed, your part numbers are correct.  And only ~$30 a piece, much more palatable....

Please disregard the part numbers I posted earlier....

Do you need to order 2 of each part number? Was thinking this might be nice to have on the 2011 with a solo seat.

MJB765,  Did you get your seat?

I got the seat and positioned the trim strips so that the seat bumpers in the rear rest on top of them a little to keep them off of the fender. The front of the pass seat can't rest on the trim strips since you are not able to get the seat to sit far enough down when the front bumpers hit the strips--if that makes any sense at all......

I just got the '12' SESG and want to put the Corbin Solo on w/ the optional passenger pillon.  I do not want to remove the chrome strips and reading all of your threads I get mixed ideas if it works or not.  Has anyone physically put the passenger pillon over the strips w/out any issues?  As others noted the Harley pillon says you have to remove the chrome strips which sucks, I mean we just spent $33K on a bike and they should have a seat to works.  I called Corbin and told them about the threads on here and they too would like to know if their pillon works so please help the brother out.

Why couldn't they come out with this seat in 2011??  I like the rougher reptile look better than mine :'(

I received my new Corbin Classic Solo Saddle (Part #HD-FLH-9-S) and Passenger Pillion (Part #HD-FLH-9-TP) just last week.  I installed both on my 2012 SESG WITHOUT removing the rear fender trim strips.  Also, both the saddle and the pillion came with the keyed locking hardware.

I hope this info helps...

X2.  I too just got the same seats from Corbin.  Both front and rear worked fine. I will say that I had to put an additional washer under the bracket that holds the tongue in the rear of the solo seat, but thats it.

Pics????  I've been waiting on leather samples from Corbin for 2 weeks now. I want to make the seat look as much like the stock 2012 SESG seat as possible.

X2.  I too just got the same seats from Corbin.  Both front and rear worked fine. I will say that I had to put an additional washer under the bracket that holds the tongue in the rear of the solo seat, but thats it.

I heard that was an issue and you needed to shim up the rear bracket in order to clear the fender trim strips on the 2012's....

also tried a sundowner Demo at teh stealership and it fit just fine over the strips. The newer version of the hammock seat will not fit over them but the older version should.  Newer would neeed to dremel off some plastic under the seat.  I too wanted to keep the strips, they look nice when in solo mode.

I sent Corbin pics of my stock seat and they did a fantastic job reproducing.  I have 6K mile on it already and am very happy, just wish the backrest was better light harleys.  Glad to hear sundowner will work, was going to sell it

Pod - those pics are nice! The Corbin is even better looking than the useless stocker!

NGH, yeah they did, really happy w/ the seats.  Had to add a few washers though both front/back.  Now I want to change handle bars, not sure what type though.

They are just held on with the 3M body molding tape.

Pod - I just got back to this thread... I have the Wild One Chubbys 575 bars and I LOVE them. They put my hands in the perfect position for me, and I think that the 1 1/4" diameter makes them look much better and beefier than the stock bars. A lot of folks here have installed them.

ALSO - When I installed the new Mustang Super Touring Wide Vintage seat, I DID have to remove the trim strips from the rear fender to get it to fit. Didn't have to do that with the Corbin DualTour nor the H-D Hammock seat...

Ken.  I didn't have to remove my strips for the Mustang.  I did snip off the rear bumpers off the rear pillion tho   Then tapped that area smooth with a ball peen hammer. Went right on then.

I tried one of the demo hammock seats and the metal tab at the back won't sit flush to screw it down. Am i missing something here ?

thanks
