Batwing fuel gauge removal???
« on: July 15, 2018, 10:38:42 AM »

Hi All,

I'm looking for instructions on how to replace my fuel gauge on my '08 CVO Ultra.

I have googled it numerous times, different ways with the same results... Lots about re & re of Softails, but I can't find anything on my model or any fairing mounted gauges.

If someone could assist me with instructions on how to remove the gauge it would be appreciated very much.  I have removed the 2 nuts on either side holding the black collar in place, but that has not released it, and now I'm stuck.  :nixweiss:

The backside of the gauge has threads as if the black collar unscrews from it, but again I can't get it to move and I certainly do not want to force it.  The dealer where I purchased it from was of little help, just supplied the part and printed off a diagram of the various parts and plugs, but no instructions on how to do it.

Please help.

Thanks,
Mike

PS - I always go by the mileage to know when I require fuel and rarely look at the gauge.  However since it has been acting up with the dial bouncing back & forth, I can't stop staring at it!  It is driving me crazy!

With the horseshoe and wires off it just slides out the front.

Thanks for your response, but "horseshoe"?  Not sure what you're referring to.

I have removed the bolts on both sides of the black collar, unplugged the wiring harness and removed the light, but still can't budge the gauge.  I tries removing the black collar, but can't do that either... I must be missing something???

Is the black collar attached to the gauge and comes out with it, or is it holding the gauge in place?  Either way, nothing is moving so I must have to undo something else, which I'm unaware of.

Still need your assistance, please & thank you.

Okay, I finally got it!

I just had to rely on that old saying, "when in doubt give it a clout".  Actually it was more of a good tug with the assistance of a flathead screwdriver.

I was concerned with breaking the black plastic collar if I pulled to hard, and with it being in place for 10+ years, it simply needed a little coaching to set it free.

Thanks for your input Twolane.

Take care,

Mike

The "black collar" thing is the horseshoe.  It tightens from the back pushing on the inside of the fairing and pulling the instrument in against the outside of the fairings.  Yours has just been in place it's a wee bit stuck.  Rock it side to side a little or give it a more robust shove!

Yeah, like that Mike!!  :2vrolijk_21:

Well done man, another little victory in the zen of motorcycle maintenance (where's Phaedrus when we need him?).
