Candy I talked to HD Dude totay about the same thing. Any of the Sony units will work but most are not water proof. There is a harness that makes the Sony unit work with the stock handle bar controls.

I did not care if the unit was water proof since the bike I am going to put it in is only going to be my under 1000 mile a trip bike.

Give Jim a call, he will steer you in the right direction, and order it for you also :2vrolijk_21:

Biketronics makes adapters so you can run standard automotive stereos on our bikes and still retain the use of the hand controls. From there a marine grade radio is a better choice for its weather protection.

My radio is not waterproof so I made a cover for the face of it. If installing it yourself there are things you can do to help with keeping some of the water/moisture out. I've learned the expensive way. :-[

Candy;
Happy to help out. The Hawg-wired HSA kit includes a Billet mounting bezel and steel innerframe to hold the aftermarket stereo in place. Also included is an adapter that allows the handlebar controls to work with any remote ready Sony Stereo. The unit that I have had good luck with is the Sony CDX-50M. The best place to get the stereo is Crutchfield.com.

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=221050&i=158CDXF50M&c=20&tp=1721

This unit is marine rated and silver faced so it will look good in the SEEG dash. It is also plays MP3 cd's and you can add satelite radio as well. I have the HSA kits in stock as well.

Hope this helps

Mrs. We,

There are a couple of other sources for the Sony CDX-50M if you are interested.  Crutchfield is an excellent vendor with outstanding customer service, but they aren't known for low prices.

I have never shopped that deck before :-\ Good to know they are out there cheaper. Crutchfield is really hard to beat for customer service though.

Crutchfield is local to me, and they do have an Outlet Store (inside their store). People will order/buy things, return them, and Crutchfield will inspect/test them an offer discounts while still maintaining the factory warranty. You would be surprised on the deals you can get on TV's after the Super Bowl because people have purchased big/wide screen TV's to watch the game on then return them. :shocked2: :sneaky:

Puzzled, do you know of a flip up face like yours that is water proof?

Unfortunately no. I didn't kill my first unit by riding in the rain. I killed it with the garden hose! Riding back from Daytona I caught a good five hours of rain and I simply closed the screen. When I got home I could see some condensation in the face plate of the radio. I let it sit for a day or two to dry out before turning the radio on, no problem.

Crutchfield has a list of competitors that they will match prices with.  Bought a Sony big screen hdtv last year and they matched the price for me.  Must be a valid Sony retailer if I recall correctly.

There are several advantages of a marine grade unit..... they're generally more dust proof, as well as more shock resistant.  Both important considerations for a motorcycle.

And I do believe that I saw a flip up screen unit at the boat dealership last summer, when I took my boat in for service.

what are his requirements for the replacement

Better sound (more volume), plus XM and if possible, XM portability

His died, has been heading that way since new, but I made him get his replaced under warranty.  Now he will have a brand new stock one in about a week, and he wants a replacement with the above requirements.

Since the Sony only puts out 17W per, anyone know of a high output marine radio that can be controlled via an adapter kit for the handlebar controls?  Should also be XM ready, play MP3 CDs, and have an iPod jack.  I doubt that it exists, but asking is worth a shot...

Did that with an acquaintance here a year or so ago.  He bought the radio head unit on eBay for just over a hundred bucks.  At that he figured the amp kit and radio were still cheaper than a replacement radio from Harley.  A little more overall once the control adapter and mounting bracket were figured in.  But he ended up with a much more capable overall system when done.

Ernie, when the buddy here did his many months back he did a fair bit of homework.  Didn't find a marine unit that combined greater output and the ability to be controlled with the handlebar controls.  I didn't look up any of it myself so can't vouch for the completeness of his efforts.  He's generally pretty thorough though.

I see theSony CDX HS70MW http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?o=m&g=221050&i=158HS70MW&tp=1721 shows 23 watts.

Candy;
From the look of that unit it is not a "DIN" mount. I looked at the specs on it and it is not specified so I am not positive but from the picture shown it does not look like it will fit in the seeg dash.

about 1/2 of the marine units will not fit in a a 1 DIN opening, they require custom installations. i looked at a bunch of marine units when i did my D-fly

i use a sony marine grade, as already stated hd-dude can you you a mounting kit and harness adapter

I used the Sony marine also as recommended by Jim. Sound is so much better it is amazing. But I'm on my second and now it has gone bad. Since the first one is sitting here, just back from Sony warranty repair, I was going to switch them out and send the second one in for repair but this is becoming a PITA. When I sent the first one in, since the radio was pretty cheap, I bought another and just figured I'd get the first one back and have for a spare. The Sony warranty rep. called and told me it was moisture damage and that was not covered by warranty, I went off on him, as this was a Marine Radio and moisture issues were not covered by warranty???? I asked for his supervisor and got a much better response, it was covered.
Point is I was much more careful when washing the bike with the second Sony and now I'm in the same situation. I can only assume it is due to condensation inside the fairing or due to the harness. Anyway before I reinstall the first Sony and send the second in for warranty service, I would like to know what is causing it.
Anyone else had this problem with the Sony?

Candy, I replaced the OEM radio because I could not hear it with a full face on and the speakers were terribly distorted. I'd replaced the speakers which helped a little but still if I turned it up enough to hear it, the speaker distortion was terrible. The Sony and Jim's stuff made the sound crystal clear at 80 with a full face on and gave me XM. It also works with the standard handlebar controls. My guess is the Sony Marine radio I bought from Crutchfields is a bottom of the line and the moisture protection is crap, probably not the case on the upper line Sony's. The amp and speakers are great, I just need to find a radio that will work for more than a month.

Called the guy here whose bike we put one in a little less than a year ago.  No death there.  He says it skips pretty commonly while on rougher pavement (must not have any read ahead memory).  But it hasn't died.  No idea how careful he is during washing though.

I got the Sony CDX-F50M Marine w/ XM module.

Would you happen to have any pics of the marine radio installed? I wasn't sure if the gray color would somewhat match the spun aluminum gauges or end up a total contrast to them. I decided to go with the standard non marine black Sony. Biketronics and E-glide Goodies both carry a cover that slides into the radio cut out nicely and keeps it protected in the rain and during washes. Avoids having to use the marine flip cover.

I'll be glad to snap a couple of pictures when she gets home from the shop. Dropped her off Sunday at the dealership to get more shiny stuff put on.
