The president of Orlando's Wings of Gold Motorcycle Club, who regularly participated in Broward County's Christmas Toys in the Sun Run, has been killed in a traffic accident in Central Florida, authorities said.
John Jarreau, 52, of Geneva, was pronounced dead at Florida Hospital East on Saturday after the crash involving his motorcycle, another one and a truck on Old Goldenrod Road in Orange County, Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Miller said.
Scott Caballero, 45, of Apopka, who was riding a motorcycle next to Jarreau's, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
"I am blown away," said Dave Amchir, a Broward resident and national president of the Wings of Gold. "[John] was an experienced rider, riding for 35 years. They had helped out with the police rodeo last year and were looking to do the same this year. John had a heart of gold and he had a good mind-set. He wanted to do good to help out their community."
Caballero is the road captain for the Orlando chapter of the motorcycle club, Amchir said.
Jarreau and Caballero were both riding north in the outside lane of Old Goldenrod Road at 4:45 p.m. when the crash occurred.
A 1993 Ford truck driven by Dana Lovik, 40, of Orlando, was northbound in the inside lane when he attempted to change lanes, Miller said.
The two motorcyclists were slightly behind the truck when its rear collided with the fender of Caballero's 2008 Harley Davidson, a Highway Patrol report said.
The impact caused him to lose control and collide with Jarreau's 2001 Harley Davidson, the report said.
Both motorcycles hit the ground and skidded north, ejecting both riders, the Highway Patrol report said.
Both riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
Caballero suffered a broken leg, ankle and fractured spine, Amchir said.
The Toys in the Sun Run is an annual fundraiser coordinated by the South Florida Presidents' Council, an umbrella group of motorcycle clubs and organizations. The event raises money primarily for Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood. Toys for needy children are also collected at the event, which annually attracts about 35,000 riders.
In Broward, the Wings of Gold also helps with the annual Southeast Police Motorcycle Rodeo and puts on the South Florida Tattoo Expo, another fundraiser.
The crash is under investigation, Miller said.
