Steering Neck Bearing Zerk Location
« on: April 21, 2015, 04:58:27 PM »

I've been reading that I should grease the neck bearings. The problem is I can't find the zerk to grease it! I have a 2011 CVO Ultra Classic & have read that it is serviceable!

I would appreciate someone that has greased theirs to advise me on location of the zerk & what is the best grease to use.

Thanks, Dan

Turn the front wheel all the way to the right, then look on the left side (from the riders position) of the steering head.  Access is sometimes problematic depending on the type and size of the grease gun you have, and you might want to buy a 45° or 90° fitting to replace the original straight fitting.

Dan

It should be on the left side when you turn your front wheel all the way to the right.  Sometimes the wiring harness covers it up.

It is important to let you know that you just may not have one. I am not sure what year it was after 2009 but they stopped adding the fitting. So to grease the bearings you have to take the front end loose and "hand pack" the bearing and race.  (The old fashioned way)

FWIW: I have been using the Lucas Grease and small grease gun sold at Home Depot.

The grease fitting was eliminated on the Rushed More bikes (2014).

I had to replace the standard straight fitting on my RK with a 90 degree one. There are such things as 90 degree grease gun ends but they're a pain when they get a little worn. Most any EP (extreme pressure) lithium grease is OK but don't mix it (so I've been told) with molybdenum based stuff (don't see moly grease much anymore, mostly military).
