Tire options
« on: March 25, 2020, 01:29:23 PM »

Have any of you Softail Convertible owners tried any other tires besides the factory skins? In about 2,000 miles my 2010 Softail Convertible will be ready for another rear tire. There are not a lot of options in the 200/50-18 size and I have used nothing but the Dunlop D407 until this point. I see a Shinko Verge in this size for $132 shipped to my door. That's a killer price compared to the D407. Anybody go with tires other than the stockers?

I have a 2012 convertible, and experienced similar low mileage on mine.  The OEM lasted 7K, next set (the same Dunlap 407 on the rear) got just about the same at 7.5K.  The next set, the indy talked me into the Dunlap Elite-3 200/50R, at about the same price as the originals....so far 6K on them, and really not showing a lot of wear....should get another 5 or 6K out of them.
The main point I think, is now I'm running them at 40lbs, I also understand that the configuration of the bike, and my riding style, I'm about at the max that these tires will last.  I like the these better than the originals however.

Metzler also sells a 200/50R18 ME888 Ultra for your bike.  I haven't seen any reports on tire wear one way or the other.  The Dunlop Elite 3 can be found on various sites for under $220 with free shipping.  Even Amazon has a listing for the Elite 3 for $207.

After digging into this more a lot of guys are saying the Shinko Verge is good on dry pavement but totally sucks in wet conditions. That's a deal breaker for me. I live in Wisconsin and it is raining most of the time. I got 13,000 miles out of one of my D407 Dunlops but that was about 80% freeway miles and NO burners. I ended up going with the Bridgestone Battlax BT-028. That tire was $187 shipped to my door. Consensus is that the Bridgestone is a great dry and wet pavement tire. I'll give it a try. I take my rim off the bike and take it to an independant shop for them to mount and balance the tire because the dealer is a total rip off.
