Another 2003 SERK wheel question
« on: March 26, 2020, 11:31:40 AM »

Both my wheels are awaiting to be vapor bead blasted to a nice satin/brushed finish.
However, yesterday I got a call from the guy who's doing it stating concerns about the material that the rivets are made out of.
He thinks we will need to mask the rivets off to keep from damaging them.
Anybody here know what the rivets are made of?  Are they just polished stainless steel? Chromed? etc.
I'm thinking the brushed finished on the wheel, with the polished rivets will look pretty nice, so I don't want to risk damage to them.
I may even lightly polish the edge of the rim a little to make things pop a little more.

The wheel treatment is a little subtle and not within everyone's experience Larry.  I still think it'll look fine.  It'll be one of those things most won't notice unless they're told to look for it; but it'll look good.  Should also help preserve the finish over the longer term.

I'd still not stop there though.  But I'm a little "extravagant" where that kind of either contrasting or complementing detail is chased.  I'd go ahead and break the calipers down then get the bodies powder coated in a gold to match the bike while it's all apart.  After that I'd be done though.  Because, of course, there's always a point where we're done; right?  :huepfenlol2:

Check them with a magnet. I thought vapor blasting was very gentle. I don't think it would damage chrome.
I can check mine for magnetism tomorrow if yours is not available.

Definitely need pics.  I've seen a few of Larry's in progress pics so far (we've become BFFs  :drummer: ).

The man's got a slick Centennial Gold 03 CVO bike.  I'm a definite fan :2vrolijk_21: .

Well I got the wheels back today.  It turns out the rivets do appear to be stainless steel, and were vapor blasted.  The vapor blasting lightly polished the rims to a shiny grey color.  Not quite what I was looking for, so I used some Aluminum brightener and cleaned the surface down to the bare blasted finish.  It looks brand new!  The color of the rims now match the engine color, and the rear pulley almost perfectly!
I installed new bearings, and am waiting for a couple other small pieces to arrive before I can put it back together.
Pictures to follow.
And, Many thanks to Twolanerider for his help, suggestions, and patience during this restoration project, he's been a huge help.
