Title: '14-'18 Bikes can now be upgraded to the BOOM GTS radio
Post by: Heatwave on December 14, 2019, 11:20:08 AM
Harley now lists the BOOM GTS (76000829a) as being an upgrade audio system for the older Rushmores that came with the older BOOM GT radios. It used to be necessary to install the $400 Soundz module to upgrade the GT to the GTS BOOM. According to the Harley Parts catalog, the new BOOM GTS system with Carplay can now be upgraded to any Rushmore bike with just the upgrade of the USB Connector P/N 69200031A.

https://www.harley-davidson.com/stor...08-76000829a-1

There's a different GTS BOOM part # for the Roadglides 76000834A

During Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the HD website had the pricing for the BOOM GTS lowered to $1520. Unfortunately that discount pricing has now ended and is back to the "expensive" price of $1900. Although it is available at Surdyke for $1694  http://www.surdyke.com/Search.aspx

So all you have to do is change out the radio? The xm,gps, cb, communications all work with this?

That's the plan. I'll be able to confirm when I do the install next week and then have it flashed by my local dealer.

Harley shows a different XM Radio Module kit for the 2019-2020 models that had the GTS system. I don't know if the module is actually different, but I see it comes with a different mounting bracket for the XM antenna.
I'd hate to hear of someone installing the old module into the new GTS head unit and short out the new GTS head unit.

would you by chance know if the TPM is capable with this upgrade

also, wondering if the upgrade will still show the oil pressure.

Good luck on the upgrade.

Good luck on the upgrade.

If you had TPMS and oil pressure before the the upgrade to GTS, then you’ll have it AFTER the upgrade. There will be no oil pressure for the 2017-18 models because there is no sensor to send out an oil pressure signal. The 2014-2016 WILL provide an oil pressure readout. Not sure about TPMS on the 2014-16s.

I don’t know if this question has been asked. What’s different from the Street Glide Boom Audio 76000829 to the 76000829A and why the 76000829 won’t  work with pre 19 Rushmore bikes.
Thanks

I have a 2015 CVO Road Glide Ultra. I ordered the radio right after Christmas. Finally came in on March 11. Plan on installing it over the next couple of weeks and get it to the dealer for reflash. Will advise you and others via this thread. I used two years worth of gift certificates given to me over the holidays and birthdays, hope it's worth it.

Just completed this upgrade on a 2015 Streetglide.

Installed GTS model #76000834A

As stated above: a remove and replace upgrade.

Installed the old XM module and music works but have not tried the traffic and weather yet

Out of the box, with Iphone 7 plugged into USB, carplay operated just fine without a WHIM or headset(mic) attached.

Did not replace the USB cable

Until you have the unit flashed the GPS will not operate and you will get a continuous beep out of the audio

It is my understanding that the unit comes configured with the WHIM enabled.  Which explains why Carplay worked out of the box and when I had the unit flashed, I asked them to keep the WHIM enabled.

It an expensive upgrade but it sure boots-up faster and the display so much better.  No regrets so far.

With the help of Joshua A I installed a Boom GTS radio out of 2020 into my 2018 CVO. The radio I purchased has a part number that ends in an A. That is what the new Boom kit is showing as a retro fit radio. Out of the 2020 the radio would not work in my 2018. The radio needed to be updated to the latest 2020 Harley Davidson update. I couldn't do this from my  2018. My buddy allowed me to plug the radio into his 2019 and update it (I updated his also while I was there). After the update the radio came to life when installed in my 2018. Going from the GT to the GTS is a big difference.  The GTS is so much faster.

Since this install I've been part of 3 other installs that used the non A part number radios. The key is updating the radio to the latest update first and resetting it.

i like to use waze.  especially if i'm on a well traveled road, the more people using waze, the more accurate the hazard/police info is.  the really odd part of it is when i use it in my car, the gps info shows that i'm doing 1/2 speed.  but if i'm on the bike, it is accurate.   :confused5:

You don't have a Shark. Big difference in the angle of the radio between a batwing and a shark.

The sun glare on the head unit is greatly reduced with the GTS unit over the older one on a road glide.  Its not 100% gone, but you can ride with your back to the sun and see the new unit.  I was surprise they were able to improve it that much.

Let me rephrase that, the glare I got usually late in the summer and fall when the sun is low from behind would almost completely wash out the GT on my "bat wing" with the GTS was nonexistent on the "bat wing" your results may vary

I’m looking to install a GTS in my 16 SG. The question is; the one I’m looking at is from a 19 SG. The part number on the radio says 76000783. I’m assuming that’s the part number just for the radio portion of 76000829A kit so all I need would be the USB connector 69200031A?
Thanks for any help before I pull the trigger on this.

I don’t know if this question has been asked. What’s different from the Street Glide Boom Audio 76000829 to the 76000829A and why the 76000829 won’t  work with pre 19 Rushmore bikes.
Thanks
LOL there is an "A" prefix on the part number..... Obviously there is either a different firmware installed in the non "a" part number or something internally different. I have a '15 SG with the 76000829 part number in my bike, using the Soundz module installed when the module first came out. I was having problems with the bike all of a sudden not doing the Apple CarPlay option. I checked all of my cables and changed out the USB cable too, anyway i unplugged the Soundz module and plugged the factory harness into the GTS radio. A warning comes up and says something to the effect of "This radio is not compatible with your motorcycle". So, the earlier part number absolutely WILL NOT work on an earlier bike w/o the Soundz adapter module. LOL i should have waited, i had a feeling H-D would make a new GTS that would retrofit to the earlier bikes. I've also updated the GTS firmware as well as the WHIM software. Still no CarPlay. I sent an email question to Soundz support with no answer.... I figure they aren't too interested as HD obsoleted their $450 module.
If anyone has any suggestions to try to get CarPlay to work let me know. Otherwise i'll likely get the NEW GTS radio and see if someone can test my old GTS radio in a '19 and see if it works, and if it does ill eat it and sell it to someone who has the smaller non special radio in a 19 that wants to upgrade.
Tim
Post edit: After changing the USB cable three times, my problem was the connecting USB cable. All back to normal.

have you tried flashing your radio with the newest update?  i believe it was supposed to make the gts compatible in an older bike that didn't come with gts originally.

I'm tempted by the processor speed and screen readability. Recently updated my 6.5GT Navi software to NACVO-MY2020. Assuming your new 6.5GTS came preloaded with navigation software, what map version did it come with? Does it include any "free" map updates like our CVO bikes did?

Are you sure about the updates?   You have to stick a USB thumb drive in the Multi Media connector and download the information from your Boom GTS to the drive.
Then you have to download Naviextras Toolbox to your PC and run it.   Then stick the USB into a slot on your PC and it will tell you if you qualify for updates.   I just did my 2019 and it seemed to work however mine had the latest map.   I hope I didn't waste one of my Free updates doing it because it downloaded the whole thing to the drive.

Hey Cat Eye, just ordered GTS kit #76000834A for my 2015 FLTRUSE and would appreciate your thoughts:

Does the new GTS have a factory-installed protective film covering the screen? The older 6.5 GT version came with a scratch-protective film installed which did nothing regarding glare. I removed and replaced with NuShield Day Vue film which dramatically improved viewability. I see that NuShield makes an 8.5 sized version for the GTS. Have you tried it?

For Apple CarPlay to work, instructions require new USB Cable (69200031A for Batwing; 76000374A for Road Glide). But CarPlay worked for you w/o installing new USB Cable?

To keep speakers from blowing, did you need to disconnect your speaker wires , or simply pull radio fuse?

Does H-D need to pull the fairing to flash radio/amps?

Thanks

It doesn't have a protective layer as the screen is Gorilla Glass before the screen was more like a LED computer screen. U need to have the USB cable in order for CarPlay to work. I think u can just leave the radio off before the dealer flashes it. They don't need to pull the fairing to flash the system.

Hey Trigger

No protective screen comes with the GTS. They do say it is Gorilla Glass. Thanks for the heads up on the NuShield, I’m going to check it out.

I did not replace the the USB cable and CarPlay works. In fact CarPlay came up without a Mic attached or WHIM even before I had it flashed. It is my understanding that the GTS comes with the WHIM enabled and is why when I had it flashed I instructed them to keep the WHIM enabled.

I also installed the XM module from my 6.5 GT and the music works. Have yet to try the radar and traffic.

Which respect to the stereo, I went ahead and connect and operated the it. Just kept the volume at minimal level.

The radio will continuously beep until the unit is flashed.

The GPS will not operate until the unit is flashed/zoned. Be sure mention the GPS when you have it flashed, my shop over looked this.

No need to pull the faring to do the flash. Once they get on it and if familiar with the process takes less than 15 min. Dealer did even charge me.

Hope this helps...it is amazing how fast this radio boots up!

A lot of good info. I'm looking to upgrade my system. I ride a 2018 CVO limited and I upgraded my amp and speakers with Soundz last summer, love em.
My questions is will the new GTS work with the aftermarket speakers and amp with just the typical "flash" from Harley that is needed for the GTS to work in an 2018 CVO?
any info will be helpful.

Yes, it will work.  You will need to flash the GTS to the same configurations as you did with the GT.

I have a Bikertronic system. My flash configuration was front and back speakers no amp. Then reset the radio to use the factory default EQ settings.  Sound great.

Soundz should have a recommendation.

Good Luck

I have the same setup from Soundz except I went with 6 speakers, added 2 in the lower faring. With my 2018 and the old GT I would think I will have to get the bike flashed to run the GTS. thanks for the info.

From an operational standpoint of the audio system, I can see that as possible. The output of the radio is still pre-amp.

However, I would be interested to see if you now have error codes?  Your system is configured for and looking to communicate via CAN-bus with this amp. Or perhaps, the SoundZ amp integrates into the CAN-bus?

Run your error codes and let me know. Turn you radio on and as soon as the accepted button splashes, press and hold the mute soft button until the service menu opens. I believe that any errors will be listed under the DCT page.

Received my new GTS but will wait to install when the new USB cable arrives. The installation instructions showed both a "Quick Start Guide" and an "Owners Manual" as "Service Parts". While the QSG was included, the Owners Manual wasn't >:(.
QUESTION: was the navigation mapping system preinstalled? If so, was it MY 2020? Did you need to do the thumbprint thing and download the latest map?

Unit came with the map installed. Nor sure what version.

Also, just noticed that the right turn signal/back switch button that comes with the unit is not backlit capable.

If you want the switch to be backlit you will need to order #71500484

Update: Purchased my GTS kit from Big Sky H-D and they've agreed to provide a hard copy Owner's Manual @no extra charge. Additionally, Cat Eye and I have each discovered that the updated right handle-bar switch button (turn signal + info) provided in the kit doesn't allow for back-lighting. As our CVO's have the illuminable buttons, purchased the illuminable version (71500484 @$14.20) which will ship with the manual. Regarding the allegedly "required" newer USB cable (for Apple Car-Play), Big Sky H-D says that's only needed if your bike didn't have a stereo radio installed?!?! As this kit is meant to replace/upgrade either a BOOM! 4.3 or 6.5 GT …….that "requirement" makes no sense! But it may explain why Car-Play worked for Cat Eye even though he didn't change out the USB cable.

Why in the heck do you need a new switch?

That button switch was apparently re-purposed. The GT uses that button for right turn signal/info. The GTS uses a different control for "info" and re-purposes that button for right turn signal/"back". Will install the GTS this coming week and regard the finished package as though I'd upgraded to my final scoot!

Are the model years of the two bikes the same? The GTS came with '19+ bikes and you might have an issue if installing in a '14-'18 SG. If both bikes are the same model year, AFAIK the GTS head units are identical but have different part numbers (it may be that  the only difference is the USB cables used). The upgrade GTS kit H-D now offers is configured for older bikes and has an "A" at the end of the part number.

It is my understanding that that as long as the lasted firmware M20.19.39 is installed prior to installing to a pre-19 bike you will be ok.

Anyone know how the HD app on a iPhone will work when installing the GTS into a later model bike? (mine is going in a 2018 CVO)   I'm wondering if HD connect will work, if you can send maps from ride planner to the GTS via bluetooth?

pretty sure the ride planner app will work just fine.  but 'hd connect' is only available on the 2020 bikes and requires additional hardware that the pre '20 bikes don't have.

Trigger-Man..........I just bought the NuShield for my 18 RG also, how do you remove the factory film? thanks

ok, now interested in the GTS radio for my 18 Road Glide.........the part # I found on hd.com was 7600834a with a msrp of $1899 and lowest price of $1609 at New Castle HD.

I also emailed Brian @ Black Hills HD and he priced it at $2150 shipped? Did he price me a different one than what I found on hd.com?

Big difference, is the one for a CVO bike different than 1 for a non-CVO bike?

Assuming you still have the GT radio, I simply peeled it off beginning at one of the corners using a piece of sharp plastic.

Best ask Brian @ Black Hills HD to explain the difference. I paid $1615 shipped from Big Sky HD. AFAIK, there isn't a separate part number for the GTS they install in a CVO. Back in 2015, the CVO version of the GT differed mostly in that you received 3 "free" software updates (within 5 years). There is also a separate software download for updates which I've no idea how it differed other than logo's. Took my first ride Sunday with the new GTS installed and am impressed with the brightness and speed of the new unit.

I asked him that when he first emailed me and his response was :
The only real thing that I can see would be the CVO graphics when it turns on. I am sure that there is more to it than that, but overall….That would be what you notice.

does the CVO logo show up once you install it in a CVO Vin # bike?

I saw no CVO graphics when the GTS started up on my 2015 CVO Road Glide. I plan on updating my GTS with the CVO version of the software and see what happens. CORRECTIONS: the CVO logo did appear when the GTS started up; apparently there is no CVO version of the firmware for the GTS as there was for the GT.

My mistake …..the CVO logo does appear at startup. Must be independent of the GTS as there's no CVO version of the GTS firmware as there was for the GT.

I installed the GTS in my 2018 CVO limited this week.  Last year I have Soundz speakers, amp and DPS installed in my bike.
I am getting the beep beep beep as mentioned above. other than that the only thing missing is GPS and TPMS. I know I will have to get it flashed from HD to get those working. My questions is, is the beeping coming from the install of the GTS or from the Soundz system? Reason I ask is Soundz told me before I put in the GTS I would need them to flash the GTS in order for the speakers to work but that dont seem to be the case.

also I saw in the thread something about CVO coming up on the GTS. CVO did come up on my screen as soon as I powered it up without flashing.

I believe once you get the new radio flashed at the dealer the beeping will stop. It's beeping because the Nav/GPS isn't enabled yet.

Just a final reply about my install. I put the GTS in my 2018 CVO Limited. I have Soundz speakers and amp. Soundz sent me a loaner computer to flash my system. Joe from Soundz was on the phone with me as I flashed the system. He walked me through every step.  Took about 15-20 min. Everything is working as expected. No issues. I DID NOT have to go to Harley to get it flashed, the Soundz flash took care of everything.

Anyone know how to bulk delete all 6.5GT contacts? Upgraded to the new 6.5GTS and was fortunate enough to sell my old GT unit. After shipping it off yesterday, realized I'd not cleared/deleted my contacts first :'(
Provided the latest 2020 navigation map, so don't want to reset/clear everything. Would like to advise the buyer how to clear only the contacts :P.
Or is it an issue at all? Would my contacts only appear when MY iPhone is paired to the GT :nixweiss:?

Its sounds like you have the CB but now it doesn't work? If this is the case, the first thing I would do is remove the fairing and check to make sure it didnt come unplugged, I had 16 CVO SG and did not have the CB, but if I selected it would try to connect and then would say no CB installed.

Totally forgot about checking on the CB radio operation upgrading to the new GTS radio. My 2015 FLTRUSE came with a CB which I rarely used. Just like rogercm, operating the squelch button produced a message saying no CB. I recall having to turn the CB radio on in the old GT, but I don't see where to do that on the GTS. How the devil do you turn it on? Does the GTS have a flash setting which activates it? When the dealer first flashed my new GTS, they forgot to flash for GPS and I had no navigation screen! Is it similar for the CB?

X2
From GTS manual page 196 Turning CB On:
Navigate: Home>Communications>CB
Trouble is that I see no "Communications option" to select ??? . Apparently, rogercm and I cannot find a way to get to the "communications screen" posted by Serdvd6. My communications symbol (the headset graphic on the home screen below the large Navigation graphic) is greyed out! Will visit dealer today and ask if a flash setting is involved in order to enable the CB and perhaps even the Intercom (which I haven't as yet tried out with a BSR). When they first flashed the GTS they enabled the WHIM setting (for Apple Carplay), but because they overlooked enabling the GPS setting I had no navigation screen …….only a "compass" :confused5: I suspect similar may be true for the CB.
UPDATE: I've a service appointment 5/23 when they'll hook up Digital Tech and "figure it out". In the meanwhile …..has anyone here had experience with this situation and can confirm that it's a flash setting issue?

Thank you Trigger Man, apparently I need a PH D to operate this new radio. Appreciate the help!

Yes I see the headset insignia is greyed out, I should have started with that screen, mine is lit and obviosity it lets you select it, then takes you to the screen to select the CB.
I'm sure its something to do with the flash, keep us posted.

Found what appears to be an educated answer to my question posted by Phrogg on the RoadGlide.org forum:

"CB and WHIM will work together. You do have to flip the switches in the digital tech to enable the CB, Intercom, and WHIM separately. What doesn’t work between WHIM and CB is the wired Mic is disabled if the WHIM is physically plugged in. If you just have the wired headset plugged in it works fine with the CB even with WHIM enabled but not physically there."

Explains why neither the CB nor intercom are functioning. Have an appointment with Harley Tech 5/23 to flash correctly.

Did anyone answer the question about weather or not the TPMS system still works when going to the GTS Radio?

Watched the Harley Tech flash my 2015 FLTRUSE to accept the GTS and pleased to report CB and Intercom are now functioning properly. Saw the option to activate the TPMS system but didn't bother because my 2015 doesn't have the 2016 and newer wheels equipped with pressure sensors. I understand the TPMS system would work if I were willing shoulder the prohibitive cost to replace my rims.

Also saw the option for "DAB" (Digital Audio Broadcasting) and, not knowing what is was, asked the Tech to activate it. Now wish I hadn't as DAB isn't used much here in the USA and just takes up space on my options display :nixweiss:.

Thanks for that. I use DAB all the time in the U.K. and wondered if and how it would be available if I upgraded.

I thought the wheels were the same on our '15s as the '16s. Just add the sensors. Wouldn't be the first time today I was wrong about something though.

I believe you're right that the sensor could be added to any wheels, however, I seem to recall that you'd need to replace the BCM for a later one too.

Hi, just wanted to share my experience with the new upgrade GTS. I have a 2016 CVO Ultra Limited which the wife and I travel a lot on. I have had to deal with having my phone as my main component, sending my music and navigation through the old GT system to hear. Never did use the radio for anything else. Waste of money IMO, so when I saw they finally came out with the GTS for the older touring bikes and added Android auto, I had to give it a try and am I glad I did!! In my opinion for me this upgrade was worth every penny. I was fortunate to find the radio for my Road Glide at $1,600. It took 20 minutes to install and 10 minutes to program (turning off WHIM because I don't use VOICE) then did the software upgrade to have Android Auto on the radio and it all worked flawlessly. Tire pressure MONITORS, SPEEDOMETER, OIL pressure etc..

Now I have the best of the last great touring bikes since Harley has yet to come out  with a  new  Road Glide CVO Ultra LIMITED. With the V-TWIN, I have the 117, I have the new RADIO head unit and Soundz 6 speaker system. She's got all the power I could ever want and all the sound I will ever need. I wish I had this head unit for the last 5 years of motorcycle trips I've been on!!!

I think I figured out why my wife let me put so much money into the audio system of the bike... now the bike is virtually brand-new again and a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new CVO. ( which I wouldn't do until they come out with a Road Glide CVO Ultra Limited again and the motor would have to be a hell of a lot bigger than a 117 FROM the FACTORY to make it worth considering (I know about the 134 crate motor I'm just not willing to spend another $7,000 on an extra motor)

So if you are contemplating buying Harley's new GTS radio for your 14 through 16 Harley, IMO, if you travel a LOT, it's well worth the investment. And don't be afraid to install it yourself!! it's super easy on a Road Glide. Unplug all the plugs in the back, take out the four screws, lift the radio out, put the new radio. it's just that simple. You don't need the Soundz interface that is strictly for radios that do not have the a after them and if you have a CVO, the USB cord is the same cord that goes to the GTS, so you do not need to purchase a new cord. There is no difference!!

Just hold the HOME button in for (I think) 3 seconds. Then move the HOME button to the right for "i".

Good info. I'll try that when I get home. Seems they make it kinda tough to toggle between the two screens.

Thanks!

BTW my screens are still working great!

Has anyone done the retrofit with a used gts and didn't swap the USB cable?  I'm not getting android auto and I have the latest software in the radio so I'm wondering if the USB cable is to blame.  I've tried a couple data capable USB cables between the cubby and the phone and that didn't help my issue.

Thanks.

Probably not your cord. I believe that you must have a headset paired or plugged in for Carplay or Android Auto to work and keep an eye on your phone when you first fire it up to "allow" it to work.

I also have a 2015 FLTRUSE and was considering upgrading to the Boombox GTS as well. Are the XM and CB modules compatible?

Thanks!

Both the XM and CB modules were compatible when I swapped the BOOM GTS for the GT on my 2017 CVO Limited. I did the install myself. Directions are quite easy. Then had dealer do the flash to mate the radio to the bike vin.

That's encouraging. I ordered the Boom GTS last night and am anxious to complete the install.

Was on the fence and considering upgrading to a 2021 CVO Road Glide due to the new GTS, TPMS and Stability control system. Went to look at a Black & Orange fade yesterday and realized that after having three Road Glides with the last two being CVO Ultras I wouldn't be satisfied with it as is. Would be looking at adding a tour pack, windshield, full size mirrors, full engine guard and saddlebag guards and still not up to Ultra level. So between the asking price and upgrades and the full court press by the sales staff which turned me off, I decided to walk. Upgrading my OE Boom GT will make me happy and I'll be about $30K ahead of the game.

Maybe revisit if HD decides to release a CVO RG Ultra in the future.

I've the same 2015 FLTRUSE and upgraded to the GTS. Simply transfer your XM and CB modules to the new GTS and in spite of what they say, your existing USB cable will work just fine. I even upgraded my BCM so that I could install the TPMS. I think it's all worth the effort. A few words of advice: using his Digital Technician II software, be certain your tech activates all the features your CVO came with (XM, CB) and any you've added (speakers, amps, TPMS, etc.). My first inexperienced tech overlooked activating even the most obvious feature of NAVIGATION!! Good Luck with your upgrades!

Dennis please tell me more about the TPMS upgrade / modification and what's involved. I'm assuming updated BCM, TPMS sensors and a programming flash?

I know this is an old thread, but I am just getting around to installing a gts and whim in my 2015 CVO road glide. My question is: will the wiring harness that comes with the whim work or do I have to buy the one harley is selling separately. The instructions say you need the wireless headset interface module harness P/N 69201726 for 14 thru 17 models. I ask because it appears they assume the whim will be attached to a gt radio not the gts.

So I found that the extra harness 69201726 is required to connect the CB module on the earlier bikes.
