Runs like crap at low RPM
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:56:17 PM »

Help!  I was talking to my bro-in-law this weekend, and he tells me this story about how if you open the throttle at all before the rpm's come back down immediately after start-up, it does something in the ECM which causes you to run crappy at low RPM, until it is reset internally, (done by his dealership).  He had the problem on his '01 SE and they went in to the ECM and did some sort of reset, and he now runs just fine at idle and low rpm.
I have wicked the throttle more than once immediatly upon startup, and my bike has always bad a real rough idle...(shakes the bike pretty good, but goes away right off the step)...  AND, I have the worlds worst dealership, so I have nowhere to go for the truth....
Any words of wisdom from you guys?
I am runnning a stage one load, big sucker, true-duals with SEII slip-ons, and a PCIII with TwoLanes map.  (vibrated big with the old map too...)

Sorry Breeze. Haven't experienced that problem at all. Hit the button, blurp the throttle a couple of times and off I go. Runs and idles just fine.

Coolbreeze I haven't heard of that problem and solution before but with all the electronics I wouldn't be surprised. I was told years ago that with aluminum motor parts whether they be in a boat or motorcycle and even a car it is better to let the motor warm up before putting it under a load.It will leak less oil and make for a longer lasting stronger motor. My 97 fatboy did not have fuel injection but I would let it warm up before riding off and other that one quart in the first 1,000 miles it never needed oil between oil changes.

Yup, I generally let it warm a bit before I take off too...  However, old habits being what they are, I have been known to crack to throttle a little at start up. (Still kinda hard to get used to that one finger start routine...)  Mine only runs up to 1250 or so for a couple of seconds, and then it drops right back down to a low idle.  It doesn't run real rough, it just shakes the whole bike at an idle.    Is that wahat you guys are experiencing too?

(It idles rough enough that the old lady on my lap is a nice ride, but it shakes the ash off my cigar, so it's kind of a problem!)  i know i know  [smiley=worthless.gif]

Been told all kinds of weird stuff about how the ECM goes PMS over the smallest of things. Heard once if you start the bike before the fuel pump is up to pressure it causes screw ups in fuel metering. The rest of that story was that the ECM would not reset till the next start. Heard once if you wick the throttle before or right after start up it causes problems and so on and so on. I've gotten in the habit waiting for the light to go off, pushing the button and letting the bike warm up without touching the throttle. Basically what you'd do with a modern EFI cage.  ;)

Since my bike has been reassembled, until she warms up to operating temp.if I hit the throttle a bit and bring the rpms over 3500 it only drops down to about 2400 then slowly goes back down to idle, almost like the throttle is stuck open or closing slowly??????????

why would anyone crack the throttle open when you first start the bike?
logic should tell you that you should let the oil warm up and circulate through the motor, before bringing up the rpms.
just my 2 cents.
as far as it setting off a default code, shouldn't the stealer be able to verify that? and wouldn't a trouble light be lit in the speedo?

breeze,

It sounds like your idle speed is too low - what rpm are you showing?

breeze,

I know you can set the idle speed with a SERT or ThunderMax, but I know squat about a PC.  A dealer can also reset the idle speed with their computer system, Digital Technician (speed only, not fuel mixture).

You might want to try just richening up the low speed mixture in the PC if you can.  I had the same low idle problem when I bought my SEEG, and the dealer didn't fix it so I added a DFO and slightly richened the low speed setting.  This fixed my cold idle problem (and stalling/stumbling).
