M8 S&S Cam Plate/Oil Pump
« on: November 01, 2019, 10:25:45 PM »

Getting ready to do a cam/lifter change on my 18 CVO with 5k on the ticker. With all of the talk about these motors sumping I looked into what could cure this, being, an oil pump change to stop cavitation etc...  I know these motors have had 4 variants of the stock oil pump, however, will the S&S piece keep this from happening?  Is it worth the upgrade to do this while I'm changing the cam?  I know it's the obvious time to do it, but I didn't know if this could stop "the dreaded sumping" from happening or why I'd be spending $600.00 for the piece.

Thanks in advance

I've heard or read claims from people both ways, some saying the S&S pump fixed the problem and others saying it did not.  I'm not aware of any independent scientifically valid studies that prove anything, one way or the other.  Last time I checked I hadn't seen any indication that Harley has ever admitted what the root cause of the problem actually is, so all we have is speculation from people who want to sell you parts.  I'm personally of the opinion that the problem is related to the redesigned for the M8 engine cases and oil return system, and all the oil pump changes by Harley are just their attempt to find a cheaper band-aid fix versus a root cause fix.  But that is also something I haven't seen actually proved or disproved.

In the course of the 5k miles you put on the bike so far, have you actually experienced any symptoms of "sumping", such as loss of power and overheating?

Thanks Jerry.

I didn't put those miles on, this is a new to me CVO that I purchased with 5k on it.  I've only put about 200 on so far.

I think I'd go either with the fueling plate and pump or maybe even the newer or latest HD pump with 40% more scavenging. I've seen several complaints from the S&S one.

Really? What were the complaints?  I've heard guys complain about the fueling if they needed to adjust oil pressures in having to pull the cam plate to get to the port to change springs, I've heard guys say the HD pump isn't what it's supposed to be, but I haven't heard anyone complain about the S&S.  Do you know what the complaint was?

At this point I guess it's a crap shoot.  I already ordered the S&S and will be installing it, the new cam/lifters, head pipe, all next week in hopes to get it tuned shortly after.

Thanks guys

I plan to follow your lead soon as well Jonesy. Leaning towards a Zippers 468 or 472 cam, S&S Camplate, oil pump, lifters and pushrods. Which cam are you going with?

RS468 was the cam I went with.  I figured after just buying the bike a few weeks ago this is all I'll do for a while (well with the fullsac mx pipe and the fullsac baffles in the mufflers and the power vision).  Perhaps once I pay it off I'll look into a 128 kit and some other upgrades like a chain conversion etc... but I just wanted a cam with torque "right now" when I twist the throttle.  I plan on 2 up riding a lot and all of the dyno sheets I've seen with the setup I'm looking at showed pretty good.

I'll keep everyone in the loop.

Thanks again all!
