The Tom-Tom was my second choice - went with Zumo 550.  Very likely that was in part due to my familiarity with Garmin GPS on my boat & others through the years.  No MP3 on the TT (unless I missed it).  The Bluetooth is use in the cars/truck but not on the bike since its my last place in the world (almost) with no cell phone to be answered.


The main drawback to the Garmin is the maping software for the PC.  It works, but it's clunky.  Not sure about the TT software.  Looks to be a good unit.

Remember seeing a comp[arison on these 2 somewhere.  I'll look but bet d00d has it ready to post.

Unfortunately I don't have any information on the Tom Tom. I went with Garmin on recommendations from those here that had used Garmin products already. Only comparison I did was between the Zumo units and the StreetPilot.

The RealTime Weather reports is of particular interest.  If you could use your cell phone internet connectivity that some of us already have, it would allow real time weather information at no additional cost for the XM service required by the ZUMO.

Cell phone rings all the time & when I ride, I am not in the mood for that interruption.  I resisted pagers (never had one) & used cell phones sparingly at first but not now.

What this is saying is that you will only see on the GPS what you can already see on your cell phone. If your cell phone has a LCD display in which you can view text you will be able to read (in words) what the weather is. It depends on how much information you want. I wanted to actually "see" the weather maps on the GPS screen. For this you need to have an external XM weather antenna to receive that data. If all you want to do is "hear" the weather forcast you could just use the NOAA weather radio staions. If you want to read the weather forcast you can link it to your cell phone. If you want to "see" the weather on the screen you'll need the XM weather beacon attached to a unit.
maybe d00d can post a picture of the 478 with the weather screen to explain what I'm talking about.

If you read the TomTom website it states:

"TomTom Weather gives you current weather or a detailed 5-day forecast (TomTom application version 6.0 or higher), leaving you plenty of time to change your plans if necessary. It's easy to access, gives extensive, detailed information and comes from extremely reliable sources."

What it does not say is how that information is being delivered to you. Being that it talks about the Bluetooth feature I am cofident that it is being delivered through the BT and not layed out on screen.

The TomTom Rider is a big seller here in Europe. I have no experience of the V2 model, but I CAN tell you that the V1 model had a major, major problem. All - each and every one - of those I know about failed, because the vibration wore the plastic, (very quickly - a cupla thousand miles!) and stopped them from being powered on the bike.  Allegedly this is fixed on the V2, but as I say, I don't know.

What I can say is, if I were buying a GPS for my bike, it would be a Zumo.

I read all the reviews before buying my Zumo 550 and the Rider One had all sorts of problem from falling off the bike to filling up with water. I used to have Compaq/HP iPaqs with tomtom, but if you had a problem it was a nightmare getting it sorted.

I am happy with the Zumo and like the mapsource software for planning trips.

I read all the reviews before buying my Zumo 550 and the Rider One had all sorts of problem from falling off the bike to filling up with water. I used to have Compaq/HP iPaqs with tomtom, but if you had a problem it was a nightmare getting it sorted.

I am happy with the Zumo and like the mapsource software for planning trips.

Yes, the falling off bit I've seen too, Kev, though they have a safety lanyard so they can't go anywhere far! On my '03 Ultra I had a nice interface into the Audio System, with Bluetooth, and used my iPaq in a waterproof bar-mounted case with TomTom - worked great. Sadly, no such interface exists for the HK audio system.
