WingTip Fairing light/turn install with pictures
« on: June 10, 2008, 09:41:43 PM »

I purchased and installed the BT40 LED wingtip fairing lights from ElectraGlide Goodies.  Once received, I found it to be made by Biketronics and resold by EGoodies.  Both of them sell the kit for $99.95 plus shipping.

Below is a picture of the kit as received-2 LED's with wiring, connector plugs, and controller.

They work as a running light and turnsignal that flashes alternate of the MOCO signals.

The inner fairing has a rubber u channel sealing gasket.  Figure where you want to put the LED's and cut the existing u channel.  I used 3M black weatherstrip adhesive to a fix the LED strips and taped them overnight to hold in place.  The difference between these LED strips and the other flexible strips you see are that these have the u channel molded in/on them for the install over the inner fairing lip.

On 04's and 05's, you locate the front turnsignal plug and disconnect, and simply plug in the 2 plugs of the LED controller.

Here is a picture of the install with the OUTER fairing still off.

Thus far, I am happy with the result.  They can be seen from the side, rear, and to a lesser degree the front.  I did not want to drill any holes in the outer fairing for the aftermarket or MOCO lighted windshield strips.  If these fail or become a pain in R&R of the outer fairing, they can be easily removed, buy new weatherstrips and I am back to stock.

With the bixenon headlight and driving lights on, you couldn't see the front turnsignals that well.  This system at least works for me for now.  It won't be for everyone.  Naysayers can say their peace too.   :)

I will get some night pictures.

No, they don't have a good reputation but they can also be bought from the maker, Biketronics.

I am definitely not a photographer.  This was taken in the garage with  flash.  Regarding brightness, they are definitely brighter than my Kuryakyn LED front turnsignals and brighter than my MOCO LED spoiler lights on bags and tourpack.

Had been debating about these (mostly because eGlide sold them), vs. Mirror signal (ie. Muth). These are definitely cheaper and look much easier to install!  :2vrolijk_21: john

Thanks for all the positive responses.  With the bike not running, they blend in real well to the lines of the fairing and don't stand out.  For the additional lighting they provide, they are the simplest/cheapest solution available and still look good on the bike.  They can also be fit to a RoadGlide per the manufacturer.

On 04's and 05's, you locate the front turnsignal plug and disconnect, and simply plug in the 2 plugs of the LED controller.

Here is a picture of the install with the inner fairing still off.

Bob, do you end up with stock turnsignals and WingTip operating?
Thanks,

Yes the stock front and rear signals still work and the wingtips flash off sequence with the stock turnignals.  When the turnsignals are not on, they are running lights.

If they're attached to the inner fairing, they'd just stay there with all the other junk, wouldn't they?  Even tho Bob said "Inner fairing still off" I think he meant 'outer' fairing.  At least that's what I think I'm seeing in the photo. :nixweiss:

Keith, give me a few days and I will do (rear pic).  Until then-

From the back and side, you can see the running/turns easily.

DEAD ON from the front, you can see about 1/2 of the run/turns.  Get a little off 1-2'  either side (from the front) and can easily see the runs/turns.

As far as the turnsignals-I stated earlier that they flashed alternate of the stock signals.  It is more like a strobe effect when the wing tips are turnsignals-hard to describe but they flash nicely.

I saw those on EGG but glad you can get them direct ,  the look great!
Low profile , inobtrusive and good light.

Thanks for the pics and write up!

Hey Boatman, have you had time to know if while riding at night whether the running lights would be distracting to you?  :-\  spyder

Spyder, Tommy (HD110) asked me the same thing in MV and they are not distracting to me at night.  You are a lot more visible (daytime/nightime).   I realize they are not for everyone but they work for me.

While riding back from MV, I pulled up along side a friend at a stop and noticed about 25% of his LED's were out on the LH side after riding about 1.5 hours in the rain.  (07 Ultra)..

He called Biketronics (he ordered direct from them) and received them promptly without having to send his old back first.

But he is sending his replacement set back and waiting on another set.  With the replacements, the lights's lack about 3/4" from each end of having NO led's whereas the original set(s) had led's the length of the strip.

Friend called Biketronics back complaining and they said they would make him a set with all LED's as his and mine original sets were/are.

They stated too much bend with all LED's   :nixweiss: so they may have had some early failures.

Point is, if you order direct from Biketronics, ask them if you are getting all LED's or are being shorted 3/4" on each end.

6-7' from the rear

In most Midwestern states I do not think these are legal if you can see ANY Yellow from the rear if used as running lights.

If they are just directionals then I think its OK

Anyone know for sure??

Yes the stock front and rear signals still work and the wingtips flash off sequence with the stock turnignals.  When the turnsignals are not on, they are running lights.

If they are yellow and used as running lights and can be seen from behind the bike I do not think they are legal in WI and MN

Anyone know for sure??

I do not know the answer of this.  Some semi trucks or trailers have amber running lights on the rear (aftermarket, not from the factory).  Probably not legal, but don't know if they have ever been stopped.  I doubt if anyone would be stopped just for this.    :nixweiss:
I know you asked this several weeks ago and no one answered.
To be honest, I never thought of it being a problem possibly until you mentioned it.  As of now, I won't take them off as I think they are a safety factor.
You may try contacting the manufacturer of these and see what they say.  www.biketronics.com

I also converted from the rear amber turnsignals to the red turnsignals/brake lights and I believe the light bar is too close together so I am not legal there either possibly.

Thanks for your thoughts.  I have contacted Biketronics and they have not responded.  The Wisconsin State Patrol told me they are not legal as solid Amber is not allowed.  I do like the lights and am just finishing installing.  Will let you know if I get stopped.

looking in my handy 2008 commercial truck inspection book......

rear turn - amber or red

backup and license - white

all else in the rear - red [markers, reflectors, id, brake, tail]

oops forgot - side marker - amber.

yes i can put a dot sticker on a bike
yes id put one on a bike set up this way - they are not rear lights - they are side markers. side markers can be visible from the rear & often are.
and yes - trucks and truck tractors and trailers often have side marker / turn signals.

An update on Biketronics, I ordered a set last week and they promised to get them to me by Wednesday or Thursday by the latest. Today I called to see where they were, I got "sorry, we were waiting on some parts but they are in and we are going to ship today and you should have them by Thursday." I said that was not good enough since it was their problem my fairing was still off due to their mistake, ship them overnight so I can install tomorrow. To which they informed me only if you pay for the overnight shipping. I told them to stick them where the sun don't shine.
I really like them but not enough to put up with that kind of service, so my other choice is Eglide Goodies? I think I'll save the 100 bucks.

Jorge-I ordered them from Eglidegoodies also.  Got them fine but took about 3 weeks as Biketronics is slow to deliver product.

I believe you can order from Biketronics, you just have to call to place your order (they are mountain time zone).

I installed the wingtip fairing lights. The installation was and was not easy. It was because the connectors are there and no problem at all. It was not because the plastic where the LEDs are comes straight and the wingtip fairing is a curve. I had to leave them more than 24 hours with clamps and I had to put some crazy glue at the ends. Also I filled the ends with silicone to avoid the water gets in. Here some pics.

hey Bob,, i just found this one and once again you did a great job with the install and showing the pics along the way. Too much for me on this one, so I think I'll sit this one out.   Cams are next. But I think I'll have John Sachs do that one for me. Great job as usual.

I just received a set of these for my '06 and the limited instructions say that  the wires are supposed to come out the bottom of the light on each side.  The only way to make the right side mount correctly is to have the wires come out the top.  Is this right?

The wires should come out the bottom of the light (unless they sent you two of the same side).   You are mounting them on the edge of the inner fairing?
