Aftermarket driving lights/fog lights
« on: January 07, 2009, 07:52:34 AM »

Looking to add some halogen lights of some type to the bike to aid in night driving conditions.  I have seen a couple out there such as the ones on the Kuryakyn site, but am looking for some suggestions or photos.  Any thoughts or experiences?

What kind of bike are we talking about?  Jim has some pics of kuryakyn add on lights on a RG and someone posted pics of motolights on a ultra.

motolites are pricey but they work very well.

HD has a kit that mounts on the crash bar but may interfere with lowers

Yeah, I have seen those I think, but will not work with the lowers.

If you need/want more light Jim(hd dude) sell an HID system that just plugs in and is a great improvement over stock.

Are these just bulbs that plug in to the existing lights?  I have heard some about them.

The Moto lights give the most light of all my additions and I had changed both to Zenons in my headlight

The Zenons do a great job mind you, but moto lights are like the sun

Just plugs into the stock light plug and uses less power.

Fiirst there a couple of issues that Don helped clear up with my understanding.

H4 , H8, H11 and other mounts are  universal.

If you have a H4 bulb a H4 auto bulb is the same mount.

I purchased a set for Auto which gave me 2 complete sets cheap.

a ballast is needed for every bulb and a mini ballast is preferred due to the size, I did fit 2 regular ballasts under the bat wing, but there is much less room under there than you think.

I personally bought mine from www.alineelectronic.com  and it worked out for me.

HD has a kit that mounts on the crash bar but may interfere with lowers

I'd stay away from the crash bar mounted auxillary driving lights even if they would work with lowers.  I had a set of the HD lights mounted on the crash bars of my FLHSTCI.  I had them mounted out as far as they could go and still be on a horizontal plane and at least half if not more of the light beam was hitting the lowers and reflecting back in your face.  I also had wind deflectors which made it even worse.  They looked pretty good and the light that did hit the road worked okay at best.  This time I opted for the Moto Lights and couldn't be happier.

:worthless:

Do they work with leg fairings? Is it a wide beam, a long beam or both?

Here's a link with plenty of pictures:

Motolights project a much narrower beam than HD fog lights which I previously had on my bike for 3 years (and never had a problem with glare or reflection from the fender).

Motolight mount using the top mounting bolt in each of the front calipers.  HTH.

I have the Motolites on both the SEEG and the SERK, love them but for the springer I got cheap and did the Harley fog lights. They look OK and I guess do an adequate job but are not even in the same ballpark as the Motolites. My advice, if you have the extra $$$$, definitely go with the Motolites.
